If we leave there will be a slaughter:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070720/ap_on_go_co/us_iraq

They are playing this from all angles, that AQ is in Iraq, that the terrorist are planning an attack on U.S. soil, to if we leave there will be a slaughter

One thing is for certain, this was the same crap they pulled during Viet Nam:

If we leave Viet Name there will be a blood bath
If we don't stop the communists in Viet Name, they will come to the U.S.

So after 60000+ American lives, the American people finally realized their government lied to them. They lied about the Gulf of Token, and they lied about how the South Vietnamize would be able to take over from us soon. Remember the light at the end of the tunnel

Just a small reminder, the AQ that IS in Iraq is being supported by Saudi Arabia, NOT Iran. Iran and the Shia are mortal enemies with AQ, so after we leave, it will be the Shia that take care of AQ

How many deaths will it take before the people tell the politicians to stop playing games.

The killing stopped in Viet Nam only after we left

1. I see the analogy, yet it's a reasonable assertion given the situation.
*Locally* Iraq is not VietNam. The divisions in Iraq are very different than the divisions in VietNam of the 50's, 60's and 70's.

Our approach to American involvement in Iraq, though, increasingly mirrors our SE Asia fiasco. Various reports of success as the country falls apart.

3. The people we are fighting in Iraq are not just AQ, just as Nam
in fact the Viet Cong were South Vietnamize. We didn't really understand the politics or culture of SE Asia, and the same is true of not just Iraq, but the entire middle east

Yes, there are differences, but the similarites as you point out in our approach is a disaster

I sense we will unfortunately be in Iraq for some time

2. The religious leaders
would and should take over. That's a good thing because the people do what they tell them. I get the impression they do want to live in a free country and have their own religions. The Neocons are afraid to leave. There are those billions of dollars for cities within bases. When the UK pulled out, their southern bases were looted. A lot of taxpayers paid for those bases, unto our second generations. Even so, I want it over. We'll pay for it later after we stop the mess. Give them the bases. Do you think that might have something to do with how fiercely the Iraqis fight?
