I'm watching Janis Joplin on Biography--- |

Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 12:31 AM by Gloria
wow, what a time we lived through. There she is commenting on VietNam. The "counter culture."
We could do with some of that now....
Almost hard to believe that I saw her perform at a college show....

1. I was watching the movie "Woodstock" at work yesterday. |
|
I work at Warner Bros. as a sound editor and was recording the audio on to the master. What an amazing movie!
I could not help but think that what the people were saying back in 1969 seems to echo how many of us feel these days. It was a different group of war mongers, true...but war mongers just the same.
One other thing cracked me up -- when it started to rain, a bunch of "tinfoil hat wearers" blamed the government for "seeding the clouds" so it would rain on the festival.

3. I also saw her perform... |
|
Asbury Park Convention Center around 1964/1965. She was fantastic and sang until her voice gave out. I consider myself fortunate to have experienced her magic.

4. The first time I heard her sing, |
|
my jaw dropped, the hair on my arms and the back of my neck stood up.
I saw her perform at Ravinia, just months before her death.
Does anyone else still listen to her music often? I do.

6. I Was At That Ravinia Show, Too |

Summer '70...the last time they let us f'in' hippies invade that high-brow place. LOL. I remember the place being mobbed and not hearing much, but it didn't matter. First time I saw her was with Big Brother at the infamous Knetic Playground in '69...Country Joe and Hot Tuna also played that night. I was young, but I can still feel the excitement of that night all these years later.
Last summer finally got to the Haight and Golden Gate Park...my own "summer of love". I kept looking up in the windows and hoping to see Janis look out.
One great quote of hers..."I make love to hundreds on stage all night and then go home alone". She still stands alone.
Cheers...

10. I was lucky enough to have a seat inside. |
|
I was in Row 12, or something like that. I could see and hear everything.
Remember when Janis went to her high school reunion? Wouldn't it be great if everyone who ever had a rough time in high school could make that kind of a triumphant return?

A lot of energy came through her. Sometimes it's strange to watch film of her, and know that powerful, powerful voice is coming through that young lady. Watching/reading interviews with her can break your heart, because she felt so much pain.
Jim Morrison's "The Unknown Soldier" was the first anti-Vietnam war song by one of rock's super groups. Janis and Jimi both spoke out for peace, too.

8. Do you know the song "Chelsea Hotel" by Leonard Cohen? |
|
It is said that he and Janis were together for awhile and this song is about her. It's one of my favorites. Check it out. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Dx11oNHPDrA

9. I was a student at a fairly straight-laced Midwestern Lutheran college |
|
during the height of Janis' career.
I always admired her gutsiness and individuality and was shocked and saddened when she died. I was also surprised to see how many of my fellow students felt the same way, since we weren't exactly "rock and roll college."

11. Where did you go to school? |
|
I was at Valparaiso University, another straight-laced Midwestern Lutheran college. Things were looser there during the sixties, though.
