2. Humans have the luxury of giving their consent, dogs don't. |
|
In addition, humans receive compensation for their participation, and there are medical personell on hand to take care of any injuries. Oh, and these human fights aren't to the death.
Yeah, there are some big differences.

3. Humans can consent. Dogs cannot. |
|
My understanding is that fighting dogs are conditioned by their owners and trainers to fight, and they often are treated poorly (or killed) by their owners if they don't perform well.

5. When an ultimate fighter says... |
|
Hell yeah, I'd love to have my flesh ripped off and be killed without euthanasia...oh, and please add the internal bleeding...and give my paycheck to Sparky, my dog...then they're about the same.
(Apologies to the original poster who has no idea how much cruelty to animals infuriates me. My rage is against the people who encourage dog fighting. I am not rational about this subject, and do not wish to be.)

Human fighting and dog fighting are repugnant but since humans can consent and dogs can't only the latter should be outlawed...

I admit that I haven't watched any of the "new" types of fighting (MMA, etc), but I hear the same type of attacks being made on them that I have heard people make against boxing for years.
By the way, I'll be at the Berto fight next Friday. I think he's from your neighborhood.

That guy has Tyseon-esque power. I love watching him fight because I can't recall another guy that hits as hard as he does.

It's the ESPN FNF. I think it's going to be a good card. Berto is definitely an explosive fighter.

13. No it isn't just as brutal. |
|
Generally people do not end up directly dead or massively maimed. There are actually rules, so it turns out it is really penultimate fighting and not ultimate fighting.
I rarely watch, but have on occasion. The rules in place are there to avoid death and serious injury, but there are participants who just ignore the rules, as there are in boxing, and challenge the refs to enforce discipline. I did see one highly promoted match on Showtime where one of the Gracie brothers (who brought jiu-jitsu into the mix of techniques used) was nearly killed by a series of illegal blows to the head. That was the last mixed martial arts/ultimate fighting match I watched other than in passing via click-thru.
Dog fights and other animal fights are far more directly brutal.

19. What an overexaggeration |
|
Renzo Gracie took two knees to the head and the bout was stopped for illegal blows. They weren't devastating and he's going to be back fighting soon. Nearly killed... whatever. :eyes:
MMA is a skilled sport where people learn on the ground wrestling and jiu-jitsu technique as much as it is a stand up boxing match. The refs are very quick to stop fights and protect guys that are in trouble and it in NO WAY resembles a criminal activity like dog fighting.
It has more similarity to boxing than anything else.

25. It isn't similar to boxing in one regard - Don King hasn't ruined it yet |
|
I love MMA and have given up boxing to watch "unknown" fighters in much more exciting matches.
MMA is the future.

To even think the two compare, greatly diminishes the atrocity that is dog fighting.

20. It's only like dog fighting in that it's a fearful and inappropriate response to life. |
|
What's now known about head and brain injury ought to mitigate more strongly against this sort of spectacle, despite the long history of brutal and bloody sport for the masses.
We have lots of chances to get better as a species, but we don't often take them.

Unless somebody takes the UFC loser out back, douses them with water and electrocutes them, I think we can safely assume it's a bit different. Haven't heard of any of the MMA guys getting their face half ripped off, or living their lives on short chains except when they're let off to fight, or being deprived of basic medical care, or being strapped down and bred against their will either.

They stop fights immediately if someone can't defend themselves or escape a hold. Much safer than boxing, where you get smashed in the head dozens of times per fight even if you're winning fairly cleanly.
They've also banned most of the really dangerous strikes.
