Bush-Cheney Block All Contempt of Congress Proceedings, Leaving Inherent Contempt or Impeachment Only Options
Submitted by davidswanson on Fri, 2007-07-20 11:27. Media

The Washington Post reports:

Bush administration officials unveiled a bold new assertion of executive authority yesterday in the dispute over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, saying that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege.

Let's hope this spares us more wasted time and Congress moves on impeachment now.

2. Sergeant at Arms! Do Your Duty!
wonder if Bush will bar the door if the Sergeant at Arms comes to arrest Miers? I hope Rep. Conyers realizes he can't back down. Otherwise, we've lost our country, and its a defacto dictatorship.

Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 07:08 AM by fasttense
is in charge of the justice department and he ain't going to follow no stinking laws. But, hey, hey, hey, the dictator owns the Dancing Supremes. I doubt he will allow Congress to lock up any of his worshipers. He will just give them pardons and then it will be before his best, best friends ever, Roberts and Alito.

5. But that's the whole point
The law is what the bushes and Dick say it is. We are no longer a country of laws but a country ruled by one or two little men.

but sadly for the country, that's the way it is with these criminals.

The next step will be to block any federal law enforcement personnel from following orders to arrest and detain anyone cited for inherent contempt.

Brand said the position is essentially telling Congress: "Because we control the enforcement process, we are going to thumb our nose at you."

And the media will talk about Paris Hilton

14. I just want to see Congress do something about this, like yesterday.
And NOT with a strongly worded letter, or stamping their feet. Something concrete needs to be done to stop the madness.

25. I think so too
August is going to be a very interesting month in American history.

80% disapproval, new dictatorial powers, Congress on vacation, Iraq going to super-double hell on Earth. Even the most passive citizen is going to notice something's wrong.

26. Call your REPUBLICAN Reps and Senators
I live in NC where both Senators are Repubs (Dole and Burr). I have called in the past to register my displeasure. Now I will register my utter disgust at the Bush administration's destruction of our Republic.

To paraphrase Thom Hartmann, here's how to talk to a Congressional Republican's office:

"I'm a registered (Dem/Ind/Green/Other) and will most likely not vote for you.

"However, if you insist on enabling the president to shred the Constitution and subvert its checks and balances, I will not only NOT vote for you, I will work actively to defeat you. I will knock on doors, I will work phone banks, I will contribute money, and I will speak out tirelessly against you until you are either out of office or your campaign is broke."

28. We may need a big event of our own, not just impeachment to mobilize the people...
Calling it a "pearl harbor" event is perhaps the wrong thing to do, but perhaps analagous in the same way that Bushco used 9/11.

I'm NOT advocating that we engineer this, but if we push confrontation to the point that we force THEM to commit such an event in order to avoid impeachment or destruction of their party (through disaffection in next election) and are prepared to document it and amplify the message, then perhaps we can get the people mobilized to do things like a general strike that could be used to stop these people and encourage those fence sitters and whistle blowers, etc. to move to our side instead of cowering under what appears to be a big fear spreading administration.

Any Congressman or Senator who DOESN'T back inherent contempt charges against every WH employee who doesn't freely testify should just go home. If they let this stand, Congress has no function.
