Has anyone seen Ralph Nader: An Unreasonable Man?
The link to the Netflix page is in my sig line.

At about 56 minutes into it, I realize why it is so important for people to discredit him.

1. "I realize why it is so important for people to discredit him" LOL!
You've come to the right place. There are plenty of people at DU who will eagerly join you in discrediting him, all the while deflecting blame from those who deserve it.

Happy Discrediting!

..."it's so important for people with power to discredit him."

But, anyway, everyone gets a chance to speak in this documentary. Check it out.

9. Sorry, dial-up. Plus, if "everybody gets to speak," I know of his past good deeds, but his
egoistical choices of role to play make me not wanting to hear anything more about his good parts.

You should see it because it addresses the argument you just made.

15. If it supports my pre-existing & inflexible opinion, I don't need to see it.
If it attempts to defend him in ANY way, I moreso don't want to see it. And if I had an extra penny, NADIR is the last topic I would spend it on.

I'm not being rude to you. It's about NADIR.

16. As long as we have on record here that you're uninterested in having your world view challenged
and that you're content to believe what you believe without having to confront any new facts, then we're good.

18. I have never made a secret about my inflexible opinions. Like it matters.
Edited on Sun Jul-22-07 08:57 AM by UTUSN
I would modify this to say that you-pick-your-battles, and for me NADIR is a zero, with any good he ever did being cancelled out by his more recent deeds. Plus, he is an OLD SUBJECT, has been thoroughly covered everywhere, including at DU. There is NOTHING to waste more time on him for. It's hard enough to keep up with NEW threats from Rethugs AND OTHERS to keep REHASHING Nadir or other SETTLED persons/topics/issues.

But, as is usual with these confrontations, somebody (YOU) slide into personal slurring when YOUR world view is challenged.

22. Where is the personal slurring?
Edited on Sun Jul-22-07 10:23 AM by UTUSN
Well, 1) "uninterested in having your world view challenged," "content to believe what you believe," and "without having to confront any new facts(sic)" JUST MIGHT tend to depict a backward, obtuse, closed, unenlightened dolt of a (sub-)human.

A more positive, less slurring depiction would acknowledge that at one time in the past, I gave a certain topic (NADIR, in this case) a sufficient amount of consideration, reached a conclusion, and decided that no further information would significantly change the outcome. It's like learning from card games that there is a point of saturation where NOTHING will change the outcome and it's time to MOVE ON to the next game or a NEW game. Hence the saying, "It's not in the cards." Being able to RECOGNIZE that happening when it smacks you in the face is a very valuable insight.

But I wonder why my post is a magnet for your wheel-spinning, as opposed to the other posters' opinions of NADIR as "twit" and other name-calling? Why aren't THEY worthy of your responses? My humility means my opinions aren't worth "a hill of beans" (cite Rick in Casablanca). And, oh my gosh, your interest is magnetically attracted BOTH to NADIR *and* to MY posts/opinions---think of the angst and self-questioning THAT will trigger in ME!!1

And, please, ALL of my points are there in my previous posts. If you're tempted to continue this, break the glass and re-read them. Thanks.

24. I think if you are sharing your opinon...
Edited on Sun Jul-22-07 10:46 AM by 1932
...the facts upon which you base your opinion are completely relevant.

If you testified as an expert in a trial, your own attorney would enter into evidence the facts which prove you are knowledgeable.

And please recognize that the facts to which I'm pointing are facts that YOU stated (that your opinion is inflexible and pre-existing that you won't take in any new information). If these statements were so personal that you're offended that I repeat them, why even bring them up in the first place? I admit that arguing that your opinion is inflexible sounds derogatory, but it was your own characterization of yourself.

Imagine how that would go over with a jury if you were presenting yourself as an expert opinion on any subject.

26. If *you* are playing the "last word" game, YOU should be up front to say so.
You didn't bother to answer my question (and PLEASE don't, not NOW, it's over, get it?), AND you didn't "get" the points I already made. Bringing up irrelevant tangents (jury, court, proof, blah------for an INTERNET DISCUSSION BOARD, for Zeus's SAKE!!1) is just more wheel-spinning.

Let me go, let me go, let me go--------'cause I'm GONE!!1

8. Ralph Nadar is a great American.
I watched this. He has helped the American consumer in many ways. Just because the system of voting sucks people try to blame Nadar for Al Gore's loss. The fault lies with Gore, the Rethug sabotage, Dems screw-ups & the SC. It is also a great fault of how the Electoral System shuts out all other parties. Dems blaming Nadar is a false premise.

10. Nader was once a great American, before he pissed it all away.
Before he let his ego lure him in to aid people who were actively dismantling all the good he once accomplished and stood for.

Sad and pathetic, really.

has already given it a great deal of thought, reflection, and comparative assessment.

I see no need, have no compelling desire, to reassess my opinion of this irrelevant man.

25. It's always amazing to me when I read that people are so firm in their opinion
that they don't need to take on any more information.

The reason I'm recommending this documentary is because it takes on a lot of issues I see discussed at DU in a much smarter more informed way.

If I believed that the discussion about Nader at DU were so well-informed and intelligent that it wouldn't help anyone to see this documentary, I wouldn't suggest it.

So, if you have the final, super-smart, incisive word on Nader, I guess you haven't been posting to the Nader threads.

It presented different views of the man. I agree with most of Nadar's views regarding what's wrong with America, esp. his views on Corporate Power.
