As President Bush disembarked from the plane, he greeted Tennessee Guardsmen Kevin Downs who was nearly killed in Iraq two years ago this August when he was blown out of his humvee in Iraq.

Downs, who is from Kingston Springs, Cheatham County, was critically injured and in a coma for a month.

He lost both his legs and was burned over 60% of his body.

"He's a good man," Bush said later during his speech. "We're going to get him some new legs and if he hurries up, he can outrun me on the South Lawn of the White House."

Someone with maybe half an ounce of compassion might have said "we CAN'T give him a new set of legs; I wish we could, but we can't. That is a sad fact of life when you have to fight a war (blah blah blah)" and THEN say something marginally upbeat about promising that he and every one of the soldiers who have paid so dearly will get the best of care, and the best possible prostheses, blah blah blah.
