Broader Privilege Claimed In Firings
White House Says Hill Can't Pursue Contempt Cases

By Dan Eggen and Amy Goldstein
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, July 20, 2007; A01

Bush administration officials unveiled a bold new assertion of executive authority yesterday in the dispute over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, saying that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege.

The position presents serious legal and political obstacles for congressional Democrats, who have begun laying the groundwork for contempt proceedings against current and former White House officials in order to pry loose information about the dismissals.

2. I just have to re-write
Bush administration officials unveiled an audacious assertion of universal executive authority yesterday in the continued refusal of congressional oversight in the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, ordering that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked unitary executive privilege.

The position presents a constitutional crisis for congress, who has begun laying the groundwork for contempt proceedings against current and former White House officials in order to pry loose information about the dismissals.

13. This is a typical ploy for this Administration...

do something egregious enough times, and the public eventually becomes jaded and tired of having to deal with it. They turn the channel and listen to something they can really sink their teeth into, like dogfighting.

14. Howdy neighbor! Have you called our delegation yet? Rehberg is useless but
I like to let him know that I know.

I've been talking with Tester and Baucas' office in Missoula encouraging them to get the Senators to say the "I" word in a positive sentence.

Testers' staff tells me they are getting a lot of calls, so many in fact that they have put impeachment on their hot topic list.

I keep pusing them to get Tester to say something like, "Maybe the house should take a look at impeachment," or something to that effect.

So if you haven't called, please do. And call the Speakers office also. She has a number on her page for her work as the speaker of the peoples house.

5. I think it was Turley who said that Congress could actually do the
trial themselves and that many years ago the Congress did that often. I also believe I have read that Executive Privilege is not granted by the Constitution.
