Filling up my 33mpg Chevy Aveo today next to a full size Yukon.
Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 02:37 PM by sarcasmo
I loudly mentioned to the lady in the huge vehicle that my fill up was only $28.00. The response I received made me realize that people who drive these Tanks will not relinquish them even at $5.00 a gallon.
The lady's response to my statement, I like my truck. My fear is that the drivers of these four wheel Tanks will never quit driving them.

1. I have a minivan
and I WANT to get rid of it for something that has better mileage, and costs less per fill-up, but right now I don't have the money to do that.
(It was a car I won in a contest back on 2000, and, at the time, a real lifesaver as back then I didn't have the capital to get a newer vehicle at the time, and my old car was on the downhill.)

Sometimes people will defend their vehicle all the while wishing that they could afford to make a change from their current gas guzzler.

Am not sure why it's important to be self-righteous while filling up at the gas station, but, I guess, to each his own: Everyone has a personal story that's not always evident when looking in from the outside.

6. I can't wait for the government
to start slapping surcharges on these gas guzzlers. When they have register every year. They can just read the odometer to see how much gas they wasted and environment ruined.

11. Sorry you feel that way
If I could afford to buy a hybrid or a more economical car, I would. To have surcharges slapped on would just keep me from being able to save up even more to be able to change cars.

83. Wouldn't it be possible
to exempt vehicles with commercial or farm plates, while adding a tax on the wealthy in their $70,000 Hummers?

Here in NYC I see hundreds of giant SUVs and none of them are hauling lumber.
They mostly just park in the bus lane while their owners are getting their nails done.

that they will exempt vehicles needed for work like farm trucks etc - of course then you have the problem that everyone selling Mary Kay and Amway gets out of paying the tax too cause they need an Escalade "for work"!

88. My dad told me about a story from the pump
It was in 2006, I think when gas had been around $3 for a month or so. He was filling up next to a guy he knew in a Yukon and my dad asked him if he would have still bought that Yukon if he knew gas was going to be $3 dollars. The guy said, "Well, yeah, I just bought it last week" You just want to laugh at the stupidity. You might think people want to get out of their gas-guzzlers but many more just don't give a crap.

2. I can't judge around here
because this is a largely rural state. Those shiny 4WD SUVs might live in the exurbs at the end of a very bad dirt road. Those F150s might live outside town on a ranch.

They usually don't, but still.. I still grin when I fill my econobox for less than $30 next to a big Explorer rolling over the $60 mark.

H2s are a different matter, entirely. There is no earthly reason to own one of those monstrosities except to proclaim one's defiant misanthropy.

A little more friendly. Understand this, tough guy, lots of us look at the phone-in-the-ear-status-SUV drivers and think "why don't YOU fuck off". You're costing us a lot.

53. You Can Blather All You Want. But Anyone Who Lifts Their Nose Up In The Air In Such A Rude And

The funniest part is that you actually think most people would come across your post and think you're the one being reasonable. Sorry to break the news to ya, but most people would absolutely feel the same way as I do.

And furthermore, are you being so ridiculous as to now stereotype phones in the ear as an SUV owner thing? That's gotta be one of the silliest things I've ever heard here. I see those goofy ear phones on everybody, and there's no damn correlation to SUV owners. Ya like to make things up for sake of having something to defend your premise with huh? LOL

And I'm costing you a lot? What a crock of shit that is. You're guilty of far more waste of resources then you should be too. Hell, for all we know you use more gas then I do. But don't let that stop ya from sticking your nose up in the air falsely so that you could feel all high and mighty and stuff. How silly!

God the noselifters crack me up!

... a ton of the "mileage" comments, for 8 years. I drove a '99 that got 30 mpg on the highway, and I would politely explain that, "Yes, I agree with where you're coming from, but you would be surprised..". Never did a "fuck off". But that's just me.

And yes, your use of petroleum costs me money. Your use of lettuce, costs me money. It's the spurious use of petroleum that rubs me the wrong way. Ease up for a bit, if possible, if only to set a good example. You would be amazed at how your personal choices affect those who know you.

59. What False Preaching That Is.
"Ease up for a bit, if possible, if only to set a good example. You would be amazed at how your personal choices affect those who know you."

My god how arrogant and presumptive a statement that is. Who are you to dictate to me how I have or haven't conserved? Who are you to falsely preach to me as if I don't already take beneficial steps? Do you think what car you drive is the be all end all in conservation? How arrogant and short sighted can you be to preach to me that my personal choices affect those who know me, as if I needed to be told that somehow?

What foolish garbage that is. In fact, I'm laughing my ass off at it. Got news for ya: You ain't guilt free either. In fact, we have no idea if you are guilty of polluting and wasting even more than I am.

But again, feel free to keep falsely preaching to people if that's what makes you feel good about yourself; even if through misguided premise. :hi:

Each of us affects the other. I know you hate that idea OMC, but your friends watch what you do, and my friends observe my actions. To be technical, it's called socialization. Believe it or not, you can own a large, gas-expensive vehicle and still be a decent person. I have a Chevy 3/4 ton Silverado. Not good on gas, but it pulls my camper, and brings my lumber and drywall home from Lowe's, so I can fix up my old Victorian. And if you and I ever wreck into each other, I win.

Studies have shown that SUVs and trucks are a lot more likely to roll over in an accident, even an accident with a smaller vehicle. You are more likely to end up hurt than the guy in the little car.

You may FEEL safer, but the data shows otherwise.

I also own a Jeep (a new one that's comparatively fuel-efficient), and I know they're prone to rollovers, having been on two tires before. The truck, though, is heavy and has a pretty wide wheel-base. My sense (despite any statistics to the contrary) is that I'd rather be in it than in a Ford Escort during a collision.

10. Why brag about the size of your gas tank?
Better to say something like "Cha! Twenty-eight bucks to go 350 miles!" seemingly to yourself, then glance toward the owner of the behemoth with a slight grin, knowing that she's getting the same distance for twice the money.

It's kind of like the old audiophile saying, "Bragging about how much power your speakers will handle is like bragging about how much gas your car uses."

12. I owns me a gas-guzzling Ford E250 Cargo Van... BUT
The gas that it uses is compressed natural gas, which burns cleaner than gasoline and is only 94 cents per gallon.

When I can get a full tank of gas in it, I can go a week without filling up. Costs around $10.00 to fill up, but its usually less than that because normally the compressor that I fill up at is at 2000 psi or just below, and it takes 3000 psi to squeeze all that gas in. I normally get 3/4 of a tank though.

I'm new here so I don't have enough posts yet to come right out and ask this in GD, but why isn't there more pressure on the aftermarket arena to improve fuel economy, with mandates to back it up? There are far more older used vehicles on the road that get far worse MPG than some of the new SUVs on the market.

Usually , people who drive those old cars are living from paycheck to paycheck and praying every day that the car will start. They have to search couch cushions to find extra money for gas money.

They drive a series of "disposable" cars.. Drive 'em til the die, and then get another one..

These people do not have the MONEY to do any aftermarket upgrades..

38.  Or maybe they are just frugal and don't believe in throwing away their money on new
vehicles. Buying a new vehicle is a losing proposition. The depreciation on drive off from the lot equals thousand of dollars. One should never buy a new car. A 2 or 3 year old car is more practical, financially, that is. My car is nine years old and I only paid $3000 for it. It is mechanically sound. My husband is a used car manager, so I caught a break and got it for $1000 over what the dealership owned it for. Not everyone can do that, though.

It took a while to find a new full-time job. In that period, I was juggling rent, utilities, car payments and insurance. Something had to give. Sure enough, two days out of the grace period and one week before my first next full-time paycheck, I hit a deer & it was totalled. For the next two years I made the payments on as asset I no longer had.

I bought a '79 Malibu for $750 and drove that for 6 years. Lesson learned.

Bingo! For over 20 years, I'd buy about one car a year (usually in the $450-$550 range) because that's all I could afford. Only now am I contemplating buying a brand new car-- and it looks like it will be an ultra-tiny Kia Rio, but it will be new and (hopefully) won't need weekly maintenance to keep it running or baby it in the mornings to start it.

It had 1 yr & 7 days on the road, but was 2 yrs old.. (a 2005 sold on 12/30/05.. we bought it on 1-7-07))It had less than 20K miles and not a mark on it.

Full warranty ..even free road service..]

price new? $34,257.00

price we paid including tax/license etc? $16576.00

Google carmax and look for a used Rio with low mileage and save a rton of money..or for the price of a new rio, you could go up a notch

to pay for both gas and food long after the Little People are unable to pay for either.

I get the distinct feeling that many who drive these behemoths truly don't give a damn about anyone but themselves. My ex was one of them, which is in large part why he is now my EX.

18. I called a local 'conservative' radio talk show....
... when they were talking about the 'SUV tax' in California. I told the host that they should tax SUV purchases because those people are driving up the price of gas for the rest of us. He tells me "I don't buy that".' And that goes to the heart of it - they're completely dogged in their equation of consumer greed and individual freedom. What I said isn't something you can 'buy' or not. It's just a syllogism - if more people drive cars with low mpg's (SUV), more gas will be used, increasing demand, tightening supply, causing scarcity now and driving up prices. When I gave him this argument, he immediately shifted to the convenience argument. He said he had two kids and he 'needed' the SUV to pack them and all of their gear in it, and said he couldn't fit all of that in a Camry (which I had told him I drive). We got into it and he cut me off.

They're scared of this argument - the thought that people are going to figure out that they're making everyone pay more for fuel so that they can enjoy conspicuous consumption.

22. what a crock for an argument
The radio show host said he couldn't get his 2 kids and their gear into a camry? I have 3 children a wife and myself that I "cram" all of our gear into everyday (and I stand 6'4"). My kids are all of the pre-school age so along with that goes diaper bags, strollers etc. I do it in a grand prix, not the greatest fuel mileage, but a hell of alot better than big SUVs on there best day. Point being, one doesn't need to drive a gas guzzler in order to make life work.

90. THANK YOU for calling them on their BS
"I don't buy it" so a little Republican worm doesn't buy the Law of Supply and Demand?! I thought that was more important than the 10 Commandments and the Constitution put together.

The argument of a Family "needing" an SUV shows just how spoiled we are. I went camping with 4 guys in a Lumina once. It was a little snug but we got there with all our gear. My parents raised 2 kids with - OMG - a car. We often times went places with our grandparents even when we were both grown up, so that makes 6 in a Ford Taurus, but hey, we got where we were going.

26. High end SUV drivers are already paying hire prices for
their gas, because most of the high $ vehicles' engines won't run right unless they are at least running mid-grade if not high octane gas. Some I've read about will force the car's computer to run the engine in a "trouble" mode which gets even far worse gas mileage. So, no they don't really give a shit.

31. I think you can do considerably better than 33 mpg with your Aveo -
you might be a "spirited" driver, but my guess is it wouldn't be hard to achieve 40 mpg, given the size, weight, and engine you have. I have a 4-cylinder Honda Accord, and have improved my overall fuel economy from the mid-31 range (not bad to start with, considering the EPA rating of 26 city, 31 highway), to my most recent fill-up that I calculated at 37.2, simply by adopting some techniques. If you're unfamiliar with "hypermiling", check it out at cleanmpg.com... :hi:

57. How's that smug thing working out for you?
I drive a Chevy Suburban, and it takes $100 to fill it up.

I was doing some running around the other day, as I needed to pick up a few things for my business. I first stopped and got two 55 gallon drums of soy biodiesel, and loaded them in the back. That's 2x8x55 lbs., plus the weight of the returnable drums.

Then I stopped and picked up the three re-capped trailer tires that were ready for me at the tire shop. Two I put in the back, and one I strapped to the roof of the vehicle. These were 22.5 14 ply lo-pro tires, weighing about 80 pounds each, standing waist-high.

I then picked up four cases of four each 1-gallon bottles of diesel fuel additive, and two cases of oil additive, also four gallons each case. That went in the front passenger seat, and on the floor behind me.

Ran around about 80 miles or so, and accomplished everything I needed in one trip. Used 8 gallons of gas, more or less.

I use the Suburban like this all the time. I need the vehicle I drive. If you don't like it, find me an alternative. I'm always open to new ways to save fuel.

OBTW, I drive less than 8K a year in both my personal and company vehicle. In absolute terms I use less fuel than many with more efficient vehicles, as I just drive less.

And if anyone ever smarted off to me at the fuel pump about being wasteful, I'd politely ask them to go fuck off.

If you want to buy an SUV, you should also pay to clean up the mess it causes us in terms of foreign policy and environmental degradation. You should be free to buy whatever vehicle you want. Just pay for the clean up.

"What is the Gas Guzzler Tax?

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS. "

The Yukon is a 5,500-lb status pig. It comes standard with 1,500 lbs of ego metal which serves two important functions: making the owner feel less deficient, and polluting the air we breathe.

That second part is all of our business.

It'd be a little easier to be up on your high horse if you weren't driving a rebadged Korean car. Or, for that matter, if such a tiny car actually got impressive mileage- even my ten year old station wagon gets 30, and it's darn near twice the size of one of those little deathtraps.

I believe.

But, I also think that, for some people, being addressed like you addressed this woman makes driving them take on more meaning, and it becomes a deeper personality issue, and will make people hold on to them longer, because it becomes a part of their identity.

My neighbor's 2005 Ford Freestyle ( a very large crossover) averages 28.5 overall and on long freeway trips averages about 34.

If Aveo is only getting 33 then Chevy needs a big kick in the shorts.
