Flag flap flutters away
Despite complaints, District attorney won't prosecute man who flies upside-down flag in protest.

The Express-Times

WASHINGTON TWP. | If it were up to Tania Meixsell, Joseph Yamrus would face criminal penalties for hanging the Stars and Stripes upside down.

But Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli decided prosecuting Yamrus for insulting the American flag wouldn't fly.

He withdrew a charge of insults to national or commonwealth flags against the township man last week.

A patriot's outrage

Meixsell, a self-described military brat, spotted Yamrus' flag on a ride home from Pizza Hut one day and complained to township police.

The mother of four and wife of an Army reservist thinks the display is unpatriotic and a sign that Yamrus, an Army veteran, doesn't support the troops in Iraq.

"Me and my husband are extremely upset by it," the 27-year-old Bangor resident said Thursday. "I'd hate to see any mother or wife of a soldier go by and see it."

Yamrus said the flag is an expression of his displeasure with the country's top politicians not its troops.

2. Shouldn't that be, "My husband and I are extremely upset by it,"?
Oh well. I think "unpatriotic" is supporting an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation that didn't deserve to be bomb and occupied and using taxpayers' dollars too do it. But that's just me. According too these pro war people, the troops are fighting for our "freedoms", which includes the right to voice our displeasure with the current administration's policies with regard to this occupation. They can't have it both ways.

24. Long before these Dark Times it always amused me how the tighty-righties
could yammer on and on and on and on about big government, government interfering in their personal business, etc., and yet time and time and time again they have insisted that government at every level work to ensure that they never encounter anything they might find offensive or simply which challenges their own beliefs. "That bothers me...I'm calling the cops!" Wah! Wah! Wahhhh!

Mad props to officials back home in the P-A for not pressing charges.

4. There are more than you think.
From what I gather, a flag flown upside-down indicates the ship is in peril.

8. That's true...
And it is perfectly appropriate to fly the American flag upside down as a distress signal. It's in all the flag etiquette books from VFW to Boy Scouts of America.

15. I Never Said I Liked Him
I was pointing out the fact that a REPUBLICAN...you know...the "patriots" the "real Amurikkkans" the "non-lily-livered cut-and-run" folks....one of THEM was flying an upside down flag. It is the HYPOCRISY I was pointing out.

All those flag-waving, gun-toting, terbacky-chawing redneck Republicans.

13. Now there's an endorsement for the ACLU!
Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 11:58 PM by pepperbear
Yamrus isn't usually a fan of the ACLU, but he admitted Thursday that the watchdog organization made all the difference for him. His flag is still waving, upside down, of course.

"I'm within my First Amendment rights. It was a trumped-up charge," he said. "The officer's been by my house numerous times and never said nothing until she made the complaint."

You're flinging flanging right you're within your first amendment rights! Kindly remember that when someone wants to go further with the flag, OK?

14. 'I believe in freedom of speech fully,' the 27-year-old said.
I just don't think that's the way he should be going about it."

Translation: "I believe in freedom of speech for those I agree with."

Further translation: "I don't believe in freedom of speech."
