I had the honor of introducing Elizabeth Edwards this evening |
|
I was asked to introduce Elizabeth Edwards at a townhall meeting in my hometown of West Des Moines, Iowa. The campaign office called me and asked if I would be willing to do it. I almost said no, only because of my fear of public speaking. Yes, I was nervous but sometimes you have to step outside of your comfort zone.
Below is what I said. I hope I did OK.
"It is an honor to have Elizabeth Edwards joining us today in the community of West Des Moines. This is the community where I live and my children attended school in this very building. West Des Moines has one of the finest public school systems in the country. I support John Edwards for president because he believes….like I believe…that every child in America deserves to attend a school like this.
John and Elizabeth Edwards are deeply committed to building One America – a country where every person can get a first class education, affordable health care, and the opportunity to find a good paying job. They’ve shown that commitment not only in John’s positions on the issues, but in the way they have lived their lives. There are a couple of things that I would like you to know about this commitment.
1. Over the last few years, Elizabeth worked alongside John as they started a foundation to give scholarships to students in North Carolina so they can attend college … and they started a poverty center to bring attention to the needs of children and families living in poverty.
2. In fact, Elizabeth came here today after spending time with John as part of his anti-poverty tour. They visited the 9th Ward in New Orleans, communities in Mississippi devastated by Katrina, and other areas where people – and particularly poor people who are predominately women -- have lost hope under George Bush.
Elizabeth Edwards shares her husband's deep commitment to improving the daily lives of all Americans and making sure that everyone in this country has the opportunity to succeed. She has been a tireless advocate for many important causes – from health care to ending poverty in America, as well as being an accomplished attorney.
I also support John Edwards for President because…as we supporters like to say…"he is the man with the plans". From ending the war in Iraq to guaranteeing health care to every American, John and Elizabeth Edwards believe we need bold change in this country. After eight disastrous years of George Bush, we need a President with big ideas who can put our country back on track.
We also need a First Lady who has the courage to tell us the truth and speaks her mind. Please join me in welcoming one of my heroes and the next First Lady of the United States, Elizabeth Edwards."

It was one of the greatest honors I have ever had. It lasted all of 2 minutes but I'll remember it for a long, long time.

You'd have to bring a camera to get those! My mom and my aunt came and afterwards we all just looked at each other and said, "why in the world did none of us bring a camera?!!!"
I did get my notes signed by Elizabeth though. So, at least I have that.
You are right about anyone being better than Pickles. I do think that Elizabeth stands out though. She knows policy and the issues very well.

I am on cloud nine right now! Don't hate though, I was so nervous I thought I would pass out! I wish I could do it over again.
