Yeah, we're in a bind. No doubt about it. Of course, it's not really any more true now than it was a few years ago. They could have declared martial law and taken over any time in the past several years with NO real impediment, particularly since the Repugs controlled Congress and Bush's approval ratings were high enough that few people would've dared complain.
This newest executive order doesn't significantly change anything, if you want to get right down to it, so let's not throw it around as if it does. Bush could've declared martial law after 9/11 and gotten away with it. Few people, if any, would have pitched a fit, and they could have easily been dealt with at the time.
I have to assume that few people here were in communication with some of the wackier RWers during the nineties. I certainly was. I heard ALL about the secret detention centers being set up all over the country, meant to house THEM once Clinton handed power over to the U.N. Most of us are familiar with the whole "black helicopter" thing, but I'd hazard a guess that no one else saw the other "evidence" that was being tossed around.
According to THEM, the mechanisms for total domination of the United States were in place back during Clinton's reign. They were all in a dither about it.
So what's all the rest of this stuff for?
I wonder.
I'm not saying it's impossible that Bush would declare martial law and suspend the elections. Anything's possible. But, as I've already stated, I think it's very unlikely. I won't go through the trouble of laying it all out again.
None of this is new, really. I've seen most of it before. Damn near the SAME arguments. Sure, Bush has pushed the envelope, but I get the feeling that he's a lot like a kid who wants to see what he can get away with. I'm not sure he has ANY plan other than arranging for his graceful exit from public life with as few repercussions for his follies as he can manage.
I know some people think I'm ignorant, or naive. That's okay. The RWers thought so too.
I will leave off with one additional warning. When someone is trying to get you riled up, and seems to be advocating armed insurrection, it's probably a REAL good idea to back away from the whole subject. I don't KNOW that there are agents provocateur here, but I wouldn't put it past them. Advocating such a thing is very specifically against the law, and it would be quite a coup of a different kind if they could bust people here for it.
Again, I'm not saying that's actually happening, but it's something to keep in mind.
If what some people fear (though it occurs to me that I'm not seeing a lot of fear as much as a kind of strange, almost creepy anticipation) actually comes to pass, then we'll each, as individuals, have to decide what we're willing to do about it.
I recommend a watchful eye and keeping one's own council and not broadcasting one's intentions over a public forum.
But, then again, maybe that's my own brand of paranoia showing through.
