What can you tell me about the radio host Pete Wilson of KGO who died yesterday?
I listen to KGO all the time at night, and I've heard Pete Wilson's name as one of the other hosts, but I never heard his show. What was he like? Was he a RW or LW host?

1. Pete Wilson the news anchor is dead. Pete Wilson the Repuke ex-governor (sigh) is not.

News anchor Pete Wilson dies at 62

(07-21) 12:44 PDT -- Pete Wilson, the passionate veteran Bay Area TV news anchor, has died. Wilson, 62, suffered a massive heart attack following hip replacement surgery on Thursday at Stanford Medical Center. Doctors battled to save him on Friday, but he was removed from life support and succumbed at 9:20 p.m. Friday.

A fixture on the local evening news, Wilson spent 12 years anchoring the KRON-TV newscast before joining ABC7 five and a half years ago. He also hosted a popular talk radio show on KGO in the afternoon.

Wilson won six local Emmys and shared two Peabody Awards, including one for coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. Wilson anchored his last show on Wednesday, and told friends he was eager to get the surgery over so he could get back out on the golf course.

Wilson is survived by his wife, Sandra, and son, Brendan. The family asks that instead of flowers, well-wishers make a contribution to the charity of their choice in Wilson's name.

May I suggest...

NonStop Radio has three core purposes:

1. To discover and assist grassroots movements in keeping threatened Progressive Talk stations on the air for their communities,
2. To assist grassroots efforts in re-establishing Progressive Talk stations where they have been canceled, or set up new Progressive Talk stations for markets not yet exposed to it, and
3. To act as a clearinghouse of information so that activists everywhere can come to the aid of threatened and canceled stations, and to also distribute tips and tricks so that any non-threatened station can be made less vulnerable by its supporters.

3. He was a news dude. I think he was apolitical
We used to get SF news out here before our local stations had a shit fit and made the satellite folks carry the Fresburg news. I always enjoyed watching Pete Wilson. He was a good reporter but as far as I know he had no overt political leanings. KGO radio is one of the better radio outlets.

4. Thanks. My favorites are Bernie Ward, Ray Talaiferro, John Rothmann,
Gene Burns (sometimes), and David Lazarus on the weekend.

The only one I really CAN'T stand to listen to is Dr. Bill!!!!

5. Nope. He was an anti-gay bigot.
Make Sure You Love The Way Pete Wants You To Love

Ever-vigilant SFist reader Robert Haaland tipped us off today to KGO talker Pete Wilson (not to be confused with the former governor, or the Canadian pro wrestler) pointing some love-related criticism at local gaydad Bevan Dufty and lesbimom Rebecca Goldfader. According to Pete (the radio guy, not the former Treasurer of the Kensington and Chelsea Conservative Association), Bevan and Rebecca have done their new son a disservice by not being properly in love (they are apparantly "cavalier" and "careless" parents). The two are very close long-time friends, and they intend to raise young Sidney together, while living in the same house, and while taking close care of each other, but without actually marrying each other.

So, to review: they have a kid. They're both gay. One or both may invite their own husband or wife into the family someday. They live together and care for each other and love each other. But according to Pete (the one on the radio, not the Scottish curler), they don't have husband-and-wife feelings for each other, which means that as parents, they're incorrectly in love. So, Pete, what exactly is the proper kind of husband-and-wife love that parents ought to have? And how, in your rigorous study of childhood development and family structure, did you determine that Sidney will be suffering?

And, Pete. As long as we're asking questions. Exactly how does one go about determining which kind of love is the Healthy-for-a-Kid kind, and which is the Unhealthy-for-a-Kid kind? What was it, in your close scrutiny of Bevan and Rebecca's relationship, that led you to conclude that they weren't loving each other properly? And where on your patented Healthy-Love-for-a-Kid Scale does the Dufty-Goldfader family fall compared to, say, single parents who don't love each other and live apart? Or parents who stay married despite falling out of love? Or singles who choose to parent all by themselves? Are Bevan and Rebeccas simply not in love enough? What's the threshhold of sufficient love?

7. Pete was a true moderate.
Not a get-run-over-while-you-straddle-the-white-line, wimpy, undecided pissant, but a genuine moderate, neither left nor right of center.

Pay no attention to attacks on his character (against which -- ever-so-conveniently -- he cannot defend himself now) that he was "anti-gay". napi21, I think you know me on DU well enough to know that not only am I among the most political, motivated, out queers on DU, but that I will go for the throat of any true homophobe without a moment's hesitation. And I say: Pete Wilson was no homophobe.

I didn't always agree with him; in fact, I disagreed with him more often than not. And he fucked up, big-time, more than once. But he said what he believed to be the truth, and he never shied away from anyone calling him on his truth.

IMNSHO, his 30-plus-year career as a truly independent journalist, his evenmindedness, his fairness, his obvious and genuine desire to get to the heart of any story, his willingness to hear out anyone who disagreed with him, and his unwillingness to mock/ridicule his opponents, far outweighs any misstep in judgment.

I am shocked and saddened beyond words at Pete's death. The Bay Area -- and broadcasting -- has lost a venerable giant.

Godspeed, Pete.
