We must demand impeachment

Friday, July 20, 2007 5:50 PM CDT

Dear Editor,

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public” Theodore Roosevelt (Republican). It is in this spirit of patriotism that we as citizens, Republicans and Democrats alike must demand that our elected officials impeach President George Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and the Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

It is clear that these men (and they are just men) have violated the law(s), they have participated in misleading our nation into war, of knowingly outing a covert CIA agent, of extreme cronyism, and of displacing the balance of power in our branches of government. We as “Americans” must rise to the occasion as did our Founding Fathers and our Forefathers when threats to our freedom, our liberty, and our uniquely American way of life arose. This is about us not our political parties. We can resume the name-calling and character assassinations once we have secured our freedoms again. And you are damn right, freedom isn’t free.

Our elected officials are failing, both Democrat and Republican as they have allowed George Bush and his cohorts in crime seize unprecedented presidential power. They have allowed these men to knowingly lie to us with no consequence, but the threat of some nastily written letter. It is important to all of us because these things left unchallenged will be handed over to the next President. That my friends, given how we seem to hate each other will lead to another unending division. Imagine if you will that a Democrat is elected and policies are put into place that by-pass the legislative and judicial branches of government, at that point it is to late to cry foul. The time to act is now; the means is by Impeachment, and this we must demand.

We all know that George Bush and his cabinet members lied and misled us into war. We know that George Bush fear mongered his way to a second term. We know that under his watch our intelligence community had their attention diverted, which played a role in the tragedy of September 11th. We have watched while our own citizens died in the streets of this nation of thirst as warnings were once again ignored. We have watched with shame at the photos of Abu Graib and the advocation by this administration of torture and of dismissal of the humane treatment of captives under the Geneva Convention. We have learned of the involvement by the Vice President and perhaps the President in the outing of a covert CIA agent for political retribution and those convicted having sentences commuted out of fear of further disclosure. We the people have had our President tell us that he has violated the law with illegal wiretaps and he would do so again. We have discovered that our Judiciary has been tainted by hiring practices based upon political affiliation and loyalty. And this past week we have watched as our President ordered private citizens not to testify before Congress for fear of the truth being revealed. For this we must demand Impeachment.

Impeachment is not a crisis but a remedy. It was the means by which our Founding Fathers desired us as a people and a nation to hold onto our principles and to keep the genius of the balance of 3 branches of government. I suspect Democrats are reluctant to impeach because they desire that same authority and Republicans because they don’t want to prosecute one of their own. Both reasoning’s are ignorant and faulty, as they are there to protect this one nation under god with liberty and justice for all.

“Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us” Franklin Roosevelt (Democrat). It is for all these things that we must demand Impeachment.
