Tammy Faye headlined a benefit for HIV patients. See what FR had to say:
Congrats, Tammy Faye, for pissing off that cesspool, and thank you for your work for HIV patients.

=====

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1049122/posts

DURHAM, N.C. - Former televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker Messner will headline a drag bingo benefit for AIDS here next month.

The Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolina, which serves people with HIV and AIDS in Durham, Orange and Wake counties, is organizing the fund-raiser at the Durham Armory on Jan. 2.

The headliner was a source of surprise to at least one group official.

"When they told me, I said, 'Oh, this is not going to work' — far right and all that," acting executive director Jacquelyn Clymore said Friday. "I have to say it has completely changed my perception of her. She appears to be completely committed" to HIV work.

Messner and ex-husband Jim Bakker helped build the world's three largest Christian networks, only to lose everything amid scandal. Her ex-husband was convicted of fraud and served five years in federal prison.

Messner was never charged.

In a telephone interview, Messner said her AIDS work was nothing new.

"Everyone has a right to be who they are. I believe that," she said. "I think people are just people. God does not put labels on people. People put labels on people. And it's none of my business what goes on in people's bedrooms."
=====

They're stinking up my STATE!

I'm not surprised by this at all.

I always thought Tammy Faye looked like a drag queen

Oh, for crying out loud! Another fruitcake that just won't stay gone.

Didn't care for her then; don't care for her now.

Go away Tammy Faye Bakker Mascara!

Tammy Faye was, is, and probably will always be a fruit loop.

From her escapades during the PTL years, to ditching her husband for his best friend, to never getting checked for cancer when she was practically bleeding to death.

(She ended up practically terminal and then refused conventional treatment. Who knows what is going on with her now.) Not to mention bizarroworld makeup. Let's face it, normal people don't go out looking like that.

I am not surprised at all that this very strange woman, who claims to be a Christian, is hosting a drag queen show or spending time with a porn star. The thing I can't figure out is how she pulled the wool over people's eyes for so long in the first place.

I hope it's not wishful thinking, but my impression is that Jim Bakker truly was brought to repentance by his prison experience, and he's now a humbled and sincere man. I hope it's true.

This strikes me as wrong.Actually God does "label" people and he does judge.

As for Jim I agree with you. I have much greater respect for him than Tammy Faye. Humility is a good thing. Always a sign of learning a valuable lesson in life. Only time and God's grace will tell wether he has.

This woman ought to be pushing the "wheel" along with the other inmates at that Turkish jail in the movie, 'Midnight Express'.

Not a good standard. But I'm glad to hear that she actively helped people she felt had helped her. And that it brought her comfort. It's one of the ways things are supposed to work.

47. "Normal" threads, for me, are readable.
Flamefests read as "ignored" "ignored" "ignored" etc.

I've turned it into a game: "Ignore Jeopardy!" Here's how to play:

Find a thread with a string of "ignoreds" and single user responses (ignored and a single other DUer going back and forth over and over). From the responses, try to figure out who "ignored" is. When you think you have it, get a shot glass and your favorite liquor/beer, and then log out and recheck the thread.

Take a shot for each "ignored" name involved, minus the ones you got right. This should put you under the table quite quickly (unless, like with some of the Usual Suspects, they're actually called out; then, they don't count in that thread's game).

:D

10. I think the point of this thread was that she did a lot of good,
maybe that she'd changed.

Now I'm not a Christian, but I still tend to think that forgiveness is a virtue. Anyhow, hating a chunk of cooling meat isn't going to hurt her but it almost certainly will hurt you. She's dead. Let go.

5. What a horrible Christian.
Not to mention, she was one of the first TV personalities to show compassion for gay men with HIV, before the scandal hit. And then continued to do benefits for AIDS hospices.

Her husband fucked up and they were framed by Falwell. She asked for forgiveness and then lead a life guided by repentance. She should be remembered for the last 20 years of Christian service, not by her huge, public mistake.

23. TammyFaye: "All Christians aren't like Jerry Falwell. All Christians don't judge."
Q: You were on TV in the early 80s discussing homosexuality and AIDS. 20 years later, that's still pretty rare. There are still a lot of churches that shun gays and people with AIDS.

A: That's right. Except for those that watched us, people didn't have any idea what PTL was about. People that weren't Christian TV watchers ate up what the newspaper said hook, line and sinker. PTL was a place where the hurting could always come. We cared about everybody. We never put labels on anyone.

Q: When you had a gay AIDS patient on, crying out for the church to accept him, how were you treated by other Christians?

A: I got my share of being put down for it. But we were teaching people that this is God's way—the Christian way—to do things. And we're going to serve God the way the Bible says and not the way people say. I felt that it was a real learning experience.

Q: Hypocrisy is definitely one of the things that has kept me from the church.

A: That's why we have to look to God and not look to people, because it's the people who are hypocritical, not God. All Christians aren't like Jerry Falwell. All Christians don't judge. People have to learn to put their faith in God and not in man. Man will fail you all the time. Your best friend, no matter how much you love them or they love you, will fail you sometimes. God will never fail you and that's what helped me to make it through what I've been through.

19. That you don't see her work on behalf of AIDS victims as "great"
reflects more on you than on her.

If there's such a thing as redemption, she did her best to redeem herself.

If what she did in your eyes isn't redemption, then what on earth do you imagine she should have done?

21. C'mon, IChing, you're being disingenuous
The woman died as horrible a death as can be imagined. Some people wished her ghost well; it's no more complicated than that. She had a checkered past, certainly. She's gone, now, and the good things she managed to salvage from her mostly-misspent life can be acknowledged without irony, it seems to me.

I know that's a concept foreign to many of you who can't forgive someone for their beliefs in nineteen-fucking-eighty, but beating down a dead cancer victim who changed her belief system in a humanitarian way is sick.

46. Unlike when Falwell keeled over,
I have nothing bad to say about Tammy Faye and I won't ever say anything bad about her ever again (if I ever did in the first place; I had pretty much forgotten about her until just this week).

Cancer is a horrible disease; both my parents had it in spades and it killed my father a few years back. For her to appear on television a day before she died- and in such seemingly high spirits, that really had to have been her very last drop of energy- took more strength than believe I have in myself.

RIP, Tammy. You certainly deserve it.
