7. Bill Clinton.
Wouldn't that be unprecedented, having someone hold statewide office in two different states in their lifetime?

10. And not unprecedent either
Spuses typically take over when a senator leaves office...although it is usually due to death.

17. I was referring to the same person holding statewide office in two different states.
There's been speculation, like when William Weld (the former MA Governor) was considering running for Governor of New York, but I don't think it's ever happened before.

Since Clinton was Attorney General and Governor of Arkansas, if he became NY Senator, would that be unprecedented?

21. Sam Houston was governor of two states
Edited on Sun Jul-22-07 02:48 PM by liberalpragmatist
... Tennessee and Texas.

Also, I know that sometime in the late '70s or early '80s, former Sen. James Buckley of New York (of the NY Conservative Party), ran as a Republican Senate nominee in Connecticut (where he was originally from). He was beaten by Chris Dodd.

And I actually read that there was one senator in the 1800s who at various points served as Senator from three different states.

UPDATED: Found who - James Shields

9. I know you mean Bill, and I think he would be a great senator...
... but I really hope it doesn't happen. I don't like the trend of family taking over vacant congressional/senatorial seats. It smacks of aristocracy.

11. Jonathan Tasini.
He got 19% of the primary vote against Clinton in '06 and would get universal endorsements from
the New York State AFL-CIO.

Full Disclosure: I supported and campaigned for Tasini against Clinton in '06.

12. I don't think so. If Sen. Clinton wins then former Pres Clinton
would be First Laddie. Wouldn't there be a conflict?

23. No, it's not a constitutional office.
But, the First Lady is called on to do all kinds of PR stuff (attend those all important funerals, read to children, cut ribbons, etc.) Could Bill be First Laddie & a Senator? I would guess that he would turn down the Senate position (if offered to him).

Interesting question though.

28. No, not at all
From January 21, 2001, to the morning of September 11, 2001, George Walker Bush simultaneously served as president and First Lady. The only real conflict was that he spent so much of his time fulfilling his duties as First Lady, he managed to blow the first two crises of his administration (the Chinese forcedown of the Naval intelligence plane, and the attacks of 9/11) straight out his ass.

Bill Clinton, being a more capable person than George Bush, could handle both jobs at once.
