Lavish lifestyles at odds with pastor’s calls for the faithful to sacrifice
By JUDY L. THOMAS The Kansas City Star

Expensive trips. New homes. An elite credit card.

The lifestyle of the Rev. Jerry Johnston’s family has raised eyebrows among former members of First Family Church.

“Everything is extravagant,” said Melisa Gingrich, who left the church last year. “That’s the way the Johnstons live.”

Johnston and the church board will not reveal his compensation, nor how much he makes from his for-profit corporation that handles his books, videos and speaking engagements.

The Johnstons go on several “Christian tours” each year. Last year, Jerry and Christie Johnston went to Hawaii, the Holy Land and Rome. Last month, the Johnstons spent six days in Hawaii. They plan to visit England in May and Germany in July.

1. Cripes...how much sacrifice do they expect from the good Rev?
They only spent SIX days in Hawaii instead of a month!

And sure they are going to England, but look at the sacrifice they are making by not staying at Buckingham Palace!

Damn selfish parishioners.

2. A blight on society
of course they all are. He was one of the first to come after us after we formed KEC. The other guy has gone down in scandal now and then, of course, there is always Fred :eyes:.

4. True but that
wacko family of his will keep this up. Unfortunately I think they are just as apt to continue until they die as well.

5. Since you put it that way.....
...if I was a praying man, I'd pray that those "Good Christians™" would be called home for their just reward. To end their suffering down here with us sinners, of course!

Oh,look! There's Fred now ======>

8. Jerry is under attack
The Star has been after him for months, and the stories just get juicier.

kiteinthewind has a great story of her visit to Jerry Johnston's church. She got on his email list and accepted an invitation to come to services. Then she felt the need to educate his flock by leaving literature on their cars.

7. Oh our resident fundie preacher!
I live in Overland Park, where this 'man of God' has his empire/church. He is truly as awful as this article says - probably worse. He was also knee deep in the elections last November.

He doesn't get as much bad publicity as he deserves. Probably because there is another arrogant fundie preacher on the other side of the state line here who is involved in even more scandals than Jerry Johnston. His son impregnated a girl who worked at their mega church and she had to sue him to get child support. Her lawsuit resulted in the son being kicked out of preacher school and word on the street is that the dad is being pressured to step down as pastor.

Too many mega churches here in red state hell. Too many greedy immoral pastors.
