Though an S.J. woman's murderer has plead guilty to the crime, the fight over Mary Marino-Starkey's remains is just beginning

The story interweaves a grisly discovery by Smith's wife, a fallen pastor turned snitch and a lightning strike interpreted by some as the hand of God.

Randall Radic, a Ripon pastor charged with selling off his unsuspecting congregation's church building to buy himself a BMW, befriended Smith at the San Joaquin County Jail. Radic later told prosecutors the accused killer revealed details of Morino-Starkey's murder that could help cement a conviction.

A few miles from the crime scene, they learned a crew battling a grass fire sparked by a rare July lightning bolt had stumbled across human remains, Basalto said. It was Morino-Starkey's remains, wrapped in bedding.
