"I don't look at all the signs that come up that I get pictures taken with . . . so I don't have anything particular to say about a sign someone else is holding. . . . Lighten up slightly. Lighten up. . . I'm not responsible for all the signs I'm handed."

1. Ah, the old 'I was just holding it for somebody
I didn't know what it was" defense.

Yeah, works every time.

2. now imagine the outrage if a Democrat had posed with a sign
that says "Bush sucks" or "Impeach Bush" or "Nobody died for Clinton's lie"

it would be non-stop 24/7 outrage from all the talking heads on Fox & CNN, and the Sunday morning pundits would opine that said Democrat is sucking up to the radical leftist blogg-o-fascist wing of the party, and that said Democrat is endorsing hatred of Bush and is blind to anything but his or her Bush hatred.

12. Look what happened with move-on regarding Hitler
One of their submissions for an anti-Bush commericial - out of thousands - compared Bush to Hitler and it was a huge amount of mock outrage that was generated until MoveOn was forced to removed that commercial submission from their website.

3. Wouldn't that be something if that could be accomplished?
Get him to pose with a sign that is derogatory towards a group or derogatory about him.

11. it could be, if someone were determined
make a sign that he'll like, get into position, and then tear off the fake leaving the real one exposed

of course it would be quickly identified as a stunt...

7. Something tells me that if the sign said...
"I'm an idiot" or "Romney's a fuckhead" etc, he would have noticed.

8. Then he's a piss poor politician.
Just in case anyone had any doubt. :D

Any good politician knows they're subject to intense scrutiny and the least little thing can be taken wrong.

His handlers should be fired and he needs to go back and take a refresher course in campaigning 101.

15. Slight emendation
He'd be a piss-poor Democratic politician. See, anything a Democrat does gets blown out of all proportion in the right-wing echo chamber, but it's okay if you're a Republican. Bush looked every bit as ridiculous prancing around on the deck of the Abraham Lincoln as Michael Dukakis did in that tank. But who got savaged? Kerry wind surfs, a physically demanding sport, but what sort of play did that get in the media from a bunch of desk-bound ink jockeys who would probably drown if they tried it?

So Mitt poses with an unfortunate sign, that's nothing for our perfumed and pompadoured media to get exercised about. But someone enters a contest for Move On that equates Bush with Hitler, and the Kerry campaign has to spend two weeks answering questions about it. See, if Mitt was a Democrat, then he'd be a piss-poor politician. But thanks to our oh-so-fair-and-balanced media hawks, it's nothing worth covering.

20. *sigh* You are correct, of course. I was thinking, remembering
more appropriately, back to a time when it at least *appeared* that those campaigning for office were held to similar if not identical standards.

When I was the "face" of an organization, I remember always being on guard about what I said and did and who I was seen with and where I was seen. Any mis-step, and I'd be the justification for criticizing the entire organization AND our cause AND, of course, all women. But, I've never been a repub so I guess that's the difference.

13. Here's a link to the quote
Edited on Mon Jul-23-07 08:08 AM by blogslut
http://news.bostonherald.com/politics/view.bg?articleid=1012871

"Romney dodged questions about former security chief Jay Garrity, who resigned last week amid accusations he’s impersonated a cop, and a Herald report that he often flashed a fake badge. Meanwhile, Romney caused an Internet flap after he was photographed Thursday with a woman holding a sign in South Carolina that read: “No to Obama-Osama Chelsea’s moma.” But he said: “I get pictures taken all the time. I don’t review all the signs and T-shirts and buttons and people I have pictures taken with.”

Now, who's got a pic of the Romney Fudge photo? :)

16. What is he, the Ron Burgundy of presidential candidates?
Candidates pay millions to advisors to carefully craft their messages and he'll stand behind any sign that anybody makes?

What an idiot. But then, we knew that already.

18. Huh. He's a better GOP candidate than I imagined.
He holds up an offensive sign at a photo op, and then acts surprised that somebody noticed. "I'm not responsible."

That should resonate with the base.
