WASHINGTON -- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says he's staying at the Justice Department to try to repair its broken image, telling Congress in a statement released Monday he's troubled that politics may have played a part in hiring career federal prosecutors.

The attorney general's comments came in 26 pages of prepared testimony that was released on the eve of his scheduled appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He is expected to face detailed questions Tuesday about the firings and conflicts between his earlier statements and the testimony of a former aide.

After months of critics calling for his resignation, Gonzales appears to have weathered the political furor that began with the firings of eight U.S. attorneys last year and subsequently revealed a Justice Department hiring process that favored Republican loyalists.

In his written testimony, Gonzales touted the department's focus on terrorists, violent crime and even aid to the 2005 Hurricane Katrina victims. He made no reference to the fired U.S. attorneys and only briefly mentioned the controversy that has torpedoed morale at the Justice Department and has called the fairness of its attorneys' into question.

"Reinforcing public confidence in the department is also critical, and will be one of my top priorities as attorney general for the remainder of my term," Gonzales said in the prepared statement.

6. Look for tics and twitches.
The more times you call back a lying witness, the more physical deterioration becomes noticeable.

8. Let him rehabilitate his image by making pretty license plates, like everyone else.
I'd even settle for simply impeaching him.

Why should the perp get a second shot? We've got many places to put people with Mr. Gonzalez's sort of integrity-- but the office of the Attorney General is not one of them.

9. What the Senate should say to Gonzalez: "You're convicted."
But first the House would have to say "You're impeached."

15. Repair It's Broken Image?

How sad the corporate media will jump out with reports that Gonzo has somehow become the savior of this highly compromised department. Sheesh.

I'm hoping Leahey sets him up in one final purjury and obstruction session. The more the merrier...and that his worming and lying will finally come home to roost in some serious criminal charges being drawn up. Then let's get it to the House Judiciary and get this fukstick impeached PRONTO.

16. Schumer's Reply
"There are probably only two people on Earth who think the attorney general ought to stay: Alberto Gonzales and President Bush," Schumer, who was the first senator to call for Gonzales' resignation, said Monday. "As long as he's in charge, the Justice Department, the rule of law and America will suffer."

Let's hope the Senate Dems has the guts to follow through. Gonzo made a mistake by messing with US Attorneys. Dems in Congress are mostly attorneys so this kind of thing riles them far more than, say, invading Iraq illegally or letting thousands of people die in Hurricane Katrina. Fire a lawyer, and you get on their bad side.

before his appearance? If not...he's going to have a rough time of it in that hearing. Article in WaPo doesn't even mention that Leahy gave him a long list of questions that Gonzo said "I don't know" or refused to answer in his other hearings...and warned him he expected replies in writing 48 hours before the hearing. WaPo Stenographer doesn't even bother to give even a snip of Leahy's firebreathing letter.
