Would the Democrats control congress now if
Pelosi had said "impeachment is off the table", before the 2006 elections? I don't think so.

1. She did. In October, 2006.

Which makes it even worse, in my opinion. After being blocked by the Republicans, how could she possibly be in a position to declare such a thing? She pardoned Bush before she even could possibly know the facts.

Is she an accomplice to his crimes? Sure seems so. If not, why the hesitation on her part to do her job?

4. she did it to neutralize the issue which otherwise would've been a rallying point
for repub voters. As you may or may not have noticed, impeachment was not "on the table" in virtually any of the 435 House races conducted in November 2006 and, in fact, in the few instances where the Democratic candidate was an avowed supporter of impeachment, he/she generally lost.

It was taken off the table not just by Pelosi, but also by Dean, because it was the right move at the time.

12. So let's lie to get into office? That makes them no better than the GOP.
Or, let's excuse the criminals so we can get front spots at the feeding trough.

Either way, it stinks and it's wrong, and it makes them just as guilty as Bushco.

13. it wasn't a lie
As you've noticed, impeachment wasn't an issue in the elections and thus it has not been a priority for Congress. Where's the lie?

14. How about their oath of office.
They are not upholding that oath. It's a lie.

15. what part of their oath aren't they upholding?
There isn't one way and only one way of protecting the constitution specified in the constitution is there?

2. Er, what? Pelosi DID say that "impeachment was off the table" before the 2006 elections.

RawStory

Published: Monday October 23, 2006

In an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pledged that impeachment of President George W. Bush was off the table should Democrats gain a majority next month.

Pelosi speculated that Republicans would "just love" the "waste of time" such proceedings would be. "Making them lame ducks," she concluded, "is good enough for me."

A video clip of the interview may be viewed below...

5. Oops. Didn't realize that.

Did everyone just "hope" she'd change her mind?

I wonder if the margin would be larger if she'd kept her mouth shut?

6. I doubt it. ImpeachPAC supported 21 candidates in the primaries and GE. Only 1 made it.
And that was Keith Ellison and he had to be dragged kciking and screaming to be a cosponsor of Kucinich's Cheney bill.

8. We need to keep in mind that she's NOT the Majority Leader ...

... and is, instead, the Speaker of the (whole) House. It's impossible to tell just how much that affected and affects her perspective, imho.

9. She did say it prior to the election
despite what people here claim, Democrats weren't elected on a platform of impeaching Bush.

10. She did say it before the election
and I understood. If she had talked impeachment, the republicans would have gone crazy and we may not have won Congress. And it was too early. We have evidence now. We didn't then. Well we had some evidence but it is just overwhelming now.

11. This is a misleading claim about the meaning of Pelosi's statement, and the last election.
Edited on Mon Jul-23-07 05:32 PM by PBass
The voters were NOT voting to take impeachment off the table last Novemeber, they were voting to get the Republicans OUT and Democrats IN.

I didn't cast a vote in Pelosi's election. Very few of us did. She is not my Representative.

WE VOTED TO CHANGE THE MAJORITY, AND THAT'S ALL WE VOTED FOR, LAST NOVEMBER.

We didn't vote for OR against impeachment, a timeline on withdrawal from Iraq, or anything else.
