To the Editor,

As the war in Iraq drags on and our military faces multiple deployments, there is a group of Americans who have been basically neglected by the media - the family left behind. Often,when a spouse is deployed, it is an incredible hardship on the stateside spouse. The average National Guard member who is activated can see a 50 percent drop in income. The average enlisted military family brings home less than $25,000. This makes something unexpected, like car problems or home repairs, an incredible stressor in an already unbearably stressful situation. Fortunately, there is a program, Unmet Needs, that is sponsored by the VFW.

This organization donates 100 percent of all donations to helping these military families with the basics, like car repairs, school supplies, medications, et cetera.

7. That does NOT appear to be a legitimate non-profit

I thought legitimate non-profit organizations had a .org domain, not a .com, required by law. Not to mention the copyright is linked to some corporation.

Also, the VFW backing itself should be a red-flag. They are KNOWN to be a private, discriminatory, and bluntly, quite right-wing group. There are plenty of legitimate national, state, and local vet groups out there to donate to. The veterans do need our support, but we should give it to organizations that will really help them.
