what would it take for you to go beyond your personal comfort zone |
|
and sacrifice your personal security for an overarching ideal?
assuming there is some kind of ideal.

...so I constantly go beyond my personal comfort zone just to survive, not that I'm happy about it. Are you referring to something specific or in general?

4. I've actively defied a number of societal norms since adolescence based on ideals. |
|
Even with my anxiety issues. So, it wouldn't take anything, I'm already there.

|
Something calling for revolution maybe; but it would have to be phrased just right. Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

7. well you'd have to convinced there is a problem with the status quo |
|
to even get to the point where you ask yourself what sacrifices you would make for any cause that isn't inherently repellent.

6. I guess it would be the scenario that currently plays out in my head. |
|
When they are coming to our home to incarcerate us for a differing opinion. When they want to disarm us. When it becomes clear that we are being silenced. Then I will give up on this false sense of security that I seem to cling to. I'm turning 40 next month. I am buying my first house ever. I just want to experience some seance of accomplishment in life before I'm forced to preserve it through rebellion. I pray it never comes to that, but I'm ready and resigned to give up everything. The way I see it, they'll take it all anyway. That chapter has already started. When I read articles describing "property seizure" for attempting to impede this lunatic's Iraq War resolution. I know that the parallels to Nazi Germany are tightening.

8. people only risk everything when they have nothing else to lose |
|
or if they feel an overriding passion that is so strong that they can not fight it.
Personally I feel that until we see people take to the streets as they did during the populist/socialist movements of the early 20th century....nothing is going to change.
People have to stop voting for what is "electable" and for what is right. People have to be willing to stand up to wrong even in the face of adversity. They have to be willing in some cases to risk their lives.

19. But, in order to do that, people have to be informed. |
|
And, sadly, most Americans aren't. They're either lazy or don't have time to look for real information outside of the idiot box.

11. "personal comfort zone" being exceeded? |
|
I've been beyond my personal comfort zone my entire life. My view is that it has something to do with an extremely aggressive and now mostly dishonest American culture run by elites that has pushed boundaries anywhere and everywhere that it could possibly conceive.

16. I've done it all my life |
|
I have put principle before personal "comfort" ever since I can remember, especially in matters dealing with labor issues. I have spooled up and walked off several jobs rather than stay and support something that defies what my conscience told me was right. I have ended profitable business relationships for the same reasons.
I have not always lived a "comfortable" existence because of the decisions I have made, but somehow, sooner or later, karma always seems to come around for me sooner or later.

I was asked, in 1965, to step outside my "comfort zone" and sacrifice my personal security for an "ideal".
They asked me to extend my enlistment in the Marine Crotch to go to Vietnam and kill people I didn't even know and had nothing against for the "ideal" of patriotism.
I refused.

I've been marching; picketing; testified before a state Senate; sued the powers that be and won; marched on the state house, marched to end the wars in Vietnam and Iraq, marched for Women's Rights; etc. ...
I've been an activist for justice most of my adult life. I still am.

24. Hate to say it, but.... |

We are ALL pretty much sheep. We have been taught to be that way. Until someone with credibility and authority tells us to do something, we will wait.
I don't think it is a failing on our part, just a learned response.
Until there is a mob mentality, we will stay in our personal comfort zones and be disgusted.
We are also in short supply of ideas of what to do. We have done the usual writing, polling, letters, phone calls, etc.
