Pastor gets 9 months in abuse of girl
Black Collar Crime
By Rob Young/Appeal-Democrat
July 24, 2007 - 12:00AM

<snip>

Garcia, 71, was sentenced Monday in Sutter County Superior Court to 270 days in jail, with credit for time served since his arrest.

Garcia, a retired Air Force sergeant, was pastor of the Primera Iglesia Bautista del Sur Colirio, 1641 Franklin Road, when he was arrested April 2.

<snip>

“Taste this, it’s coffee,” Garcia said before putting his tongue in her mouth, the girl told investigators. She ran home and told her mother, who called police.

<snip>

“What makes this case more aggravating is that the defendant was the pastor of a church, and should have held himself to a higher moral standard,” Walker wrote in the report.
<snip>

Garcia became a pastor in 1973 after serving 20 years in the Air Force. He attended Yuba College, Riverside College and Golden Gate Baptist Theological Center.

3. its a two way problem: 1. pedophiles seek out positions of trust with opportunity
and 2. Churches are in benign denial until the proof is overwhelming, and then some churches go into malignant denial and coverup to save their own reputations.

6. no, its not a good situation at all. The solution, as I see it, is to stop
having positions of trust AND opportunity.

Billy Graham never allowed himself to be alone with a woman for any reason, he eliminated opportunity.

9. smart, and safe for all parties. I think the whole catholic priest problem arises
because there are accepted private moments of long duration between priests and children....as altarboys, etc.
Often, people will invite priests into their homes and allow them to watch their children.
Being Clergy gives an unnatural excess of trust to individuals you might not really know. that in and of itself is not a bad thing, but as I said, if we remove OPPORTUNITY, then pedophiles will not WANT to enter these positions

8. Time in the slammer for abusing a girl...
What about all the other "pastors" who abused boys and got slapped on the hand and/or/sometimes transfered to other churches.

Don't get me wrong.. ALL abusing pastors need to be strung up by their balls on the cross out front!

10. It also has to do with how the church chooses to deal with it --
and how long ago the crime was committed - I'm not sure what the statutes of limitations are everywhere for rape/molestation/sexual assault but some that I know of require an adult to report childhood abuse within 5 years of their 18th birthday in order for the authorities to be able to bring charges.

Oftentimes, it takes a lot longer than that for adults to come to terms with what happened to them as children.
