Universal health scare
By Joel McNally... (Joel McNally lives in Milwaukee, is a FightingBob.com contributing editor, and is a syndicated columnist who writes for the Capital Times, the Shepherd Express and other newspapers.)

Right-wingers and Big Business use hysterical rhetoric when talking about universal health care, but the arguments for it are obvious and urgent.

The only thing preventing us from finally realizing our long-held dream of universal health care in America is a lot of ugly name-calling.

We've got presidential candidates presenting plans. We've got states like Massachusetts under former Republican Governor Mitt Romney and Wisconsin under Democratic Governor Jim Doyle willing to consider alternatives.

We've even got a popular movie, Sicko, by rabble-rouser Michael Moore entertaining and outraging intelligent Americans about just how absurdly unfair our present health-care-for-profit system really is.

When we were kids, we used to say sticks and stones could break our bones, but names could never hurt us. But the only real obstacle left blocking national health care to repair our broken bones is a lot of name-calling.

One of the most familiar is one of the oldest and most cliched. National health care would be "socialized medicine."
