US Officials To Ask Incoming European Visitors About Their Political Views, Religion & Sex
Will US citizens be next? Will Europe retaliate?

“Highly sensitive information about the religious beliefs, political opinions and even the sex life of Britons travelling to the United States is to be made available to US authorities when the European Commission agrees to a new system of checking passengers.

The EC is in the final stages of agreeing a new Passenger Name Record system with the US which will allow American officials to access detailed biographical information about passengers entering international airports.

The information sharing system with the US Department of Homeland Security, which updates the previous three-year-old system, is designed to tackle terrorism but civil liberty groups warn it will have serious consequences for European passengers. And it has emerged that both the European parliament and the European data protection supervisor are alarmed at the plan.

In a strongly worded document drawn up in response to the plan that will affect the 4 million-plus Britons who travel to the US every year, the EU parliament said it 'notes with concern that sensitive data (ie personal data revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, and data concerning the health or sex life of individuals) will be made available to the DHS and that these data may be used by the DHS in exceptional cases'.” Cont…

9. Either this will be VERY temporary
Or the number of foreign visitors to the USA
will drop by a third or more. That will do
wonders for our balance of payments.

I already know some Swiss bankers who refuse to
visit the USA until Bush and his maniacs are out,
and Swiss bankers may be the only people left on
the planet who worship money as much as Republicans.

Well, maybe not--the Swiss might have to settle for
second place at this point.

10. I just sent an e-mail to Peter Hustinx, the guy mentioned in the article...
...and suggested in no uncertain terms that this needs to be nipped in the bud...I also suggested that if it goes ahead strictly as written, that the EU should impose the same restrictions/demands on US visitors to the EU...and see how quickly the rules get revised...

My parents visit me here every year and they are made to feel like common criminals by the thugs at immigration with fingerprints and retina scans...One of these days my old man is going to get in trouble...he doesn't like tin-pot dictators much and he has a hard time keeping his mouth shut...

It would be a shame if they simply stopped coming because the hassle and the invasion of their privacy was too much to bear...

11. Speaking Out Will Bring This To The Light Of Day
this is another of those little rules that gets enacted in the darkness. I think, as stated above, that the effect it will have on tourism will be one of the cures for this. And I wonder what they will do is as an answer to those questions someone simply answers 'yes'. Throw the person in jail, refuse them entrance? Do they really want to start international incidents? Is this another of their stupid a**ed initiatives that wasn't thought out before they went ahead?
