Gonzales Wants To Stay, Fix Justice IllsWASHINGTON -- Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said he's staying at the Justice Department to try to repair its broken image.
In a statement to Congress that was released Monday, Gonzales said he's troubled that politics may have played a part in hiring career federal prosecutors.
The attorney general's comments came in 26 pages of prepared testimony that was released the day before his scheduled Tuesday appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
In his written testimony, Gonzales touts the department's focus on terrorists, violent crime and even aid to the 2005 Hurricane Katrina victims. He makes no reference to the fired U.S. attorneys.
Gonzales' statement to the committee was full of regret for his agency's troubles and included a commitment to repair the damage.
