Bush Warns Public That al-Qaida Threat Persists

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- President Bush on Tuesday lashed out at critics who say that al-Qaida's operation in Iraq is distinct from those who attacked the United States in 2001.

"Al-Qaida in Iraq is run by foreign leaders loyal to Osama bin Laden," Bush said. "Like bin Laden, they are cold-blooded killers who murder the innocent to achieve al-Qaida's objectives."

Citing security details he declassified for his speech, Bush described al-Qaida's burgeoning operation in Iraq as a direct threat to the United States. In derisive terms, Bush accused critics in Congress of misleading the American public by suggesting otherwise.

"That's like watching a man walk into a bank with a mask and a gun and saying, 'He's probably just there to cash a check,' " Bush told troops at Charleston Air Force Base.

Bush is up against highly skeptical audiences with 18 months left in office. The public has largely lost faith in the war, Congress is weighing ways to end it, and international partners have fading memories of the 2001 attacks against the U.S.

In broad strokes, Bush's approach links the Iraq war to an event that Americans remember deeply - the Sept. 11 attacks - and not the sectarian strife among Iraqis. That violent infighting among Iraqis has caused many in the U.S. to question the war's point.

the Sept. 11 attacks - DESPITE THE FACT THAT IRAQ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ATTACKS.

6. I saw this
today. It seems more people are now in favor of the Iraq invasion than were before.

US public support for Iraq invasion rises slightly

http://rawstory.com/news/afp/US_public_support_for_Iraq_invasion_07242007.html

Bush and Co will keep repeating the Al Qaeda in Iraq 9/11 connection and people are starting to believe it. A poll a while back had 41% of Americans believing Saddam was involved in the 9/11 attack and now we have 42% saying the invasion was the right thing to do.

If you tell a lie often enough, more folks will come to believe it.

9. As time goes on, especially so. E.g., the students seen on "Hardball" were what? Twelve on 9/11/01?

Every second speech he gives, there's a warning about "those who wish to harm us".

8. Connect the dots...
hyping terror, beating the war drums for an attack on Iran, putting laws in place to implement martial law, blocking bank accounts, etc. These vermin are planning to carry out an action which will establish a permanent dictatorship.

12. How can this idiot continue his terror tour when the borders are
wide open for any Tom, Dick or Mohammed to cross?? If he was really concerned about them following us home - or whatever the current spiel is - wouldn't he take a stab at closing the borders? It might be nice to secure the ports, too. I am so sick of this guy.

14. You are absolutely right
I remember last winter Negroponte was testifying before the Senate Select Committee. Sen Feinstein asked him about the number of Other Than Mexicans (OTMs) that were entering our country. Negroponte responded that in the last three years he estimated around 250,000 OTMs had come into this country. If only a small number were bad guys think of the havoc they could cause. But I for one have not heard of any border of port security taking place to rectify this.

If the mantra is fighting them "over there so we don't have to fight them over here" why in the hell are we letting them "over here"?

18. We need a bigger soapbox and bigger bullhorn
to warn the American people that he, George Bush, is the greatest threat to our liberty and democracy that we have ever faced in the history of our country. If only we had them....
