Moderation

–noun
The quality of being moderate; restraint; avoidance of extremes or excesses; temperance.

Yesterday Cindy Sheehan was a hero
Today she is the devil incarnate

Yesterday David Gregory was a hero for asking tough questions of Scott McLellan
Today he is a sycophant talking head

etc. etc. etc.

Perhaps it would be helpful if we consider moderating our hero worship, and our scapegoating. These are just people. They happen to be in situations or circumstances where their actions have meaning and consequences. Rather than riding the roller coaster of emotion and opinion we might be better served by avoiding the extremities of judgment.

1. Wow, that's asking an awful lot, isn't it?
Some people get their emotional needs met by attacking other people. How will those needs be met?

3. 'Some people get their emotional needs met by attacking other people.'
I don't think that is fair. Many people were honestly hurt when Sheehan called the Democratic party the 'party of slavery' and when she announced she is leaving the party. You think those folks are just sadists who are 'meeting their emotional needs' by criticizing her actions?

8. I should have supplied a tongue in cheek emoticon or something
You get to have whatever reaction you have. Hopefully, whatever your emotional reaction is, you can still maintain your ability for rational thought/reasoning power. It's tough, I know, but still possible.

4. I suggest...
They drink themselves into unconsciousness with regularity. They will no longer be attacking people higgledy-piggledy and everyone else will be spared the spectacle.

Win-Win.

2. I don't think it's accurate
Cindy Sheehan is still a hero to many people here, and yesterday there were a lot of people who disapproved of what she was doing; it might appear that the winds have changed but that's probably do to the natural randomizing nature of existence. For all we know tomorrow she might be a hero again or seem that way.

On the other hand, I do agree that looking at them as people is probably more helpful than looking at them as caricatures (positive or negative).

It's "watch the parkin' meters" - But I love it when people quote Bob. As an old friend of mine once said,
"There's a line in Bob for every occasion."

10. Even in your excesses
I've had enough "ideological purity" for one lifetime, thank you very much. Unfortunately, we have to deal with reality on the ground, and that can be messy.
