I watched "V for Vendetta" during my "Angry Leftist" movie marathon over the weekend.... |
|
And I just read the stories about * and his minions carping about the threat of al-Qaeda attacks, and I watched Gonzales defend torture and spying and assorted B.S. this morning on TV..... I'll be damned if this country isn't starting to feel just like the England in that movie. :scared:

3. And to think, "V for Vendetta" isn't a "LEFTIST" but rather a liberation against fascism film. |
|
I can't remember the teevee celebrity's name in that movie but he seemed perfectly mirrored after Limbaugh and/or Savage and/or Falwell and/or et al right-wing freaks in our country.

Prothero...
My suggestion.... please, please, please read the graphic novel. I'm not into comic books by any means, but my pal who dragged me to the movie is. I enjoyed the movie for what it was, but then my pal loaned me the graphic novel.
By God! It's an incredibly rich, detailed, and well-thought out story that ends up making the film seem tame, timid and mellow. (Although the actor playing Inspector Finch was a perfect cast)
Written in either '80 or '81, and app. 300 pp. Not the comic book stuff I grew up with by any means...

23. Alan Moore is the Author |
|
And you're right: it's brilliant. I *AM* a comic book guy, and I can tell you that Moore is almost single-handedly* responsible for reinventing the medium. Almost all his stuff is fantastic. If you liked "V for Vendetta", pick up "From Hell" (not a bad movie adaptation, either) and "the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (terrible, AWFUL adaptation).
Moore himself is kind of a prick, I'm sorry to say, but then, that's not uncommon with the geniusy, artistic type. He refused to lend his name to "V for Vendetta" the movie, and claims he'll never watch it (or any other movie adaption of his work from that period), but he DID trash the script, albeit in a very petty, nit-picky manner. It's a shame, because I thought the movie was very much in the spirit of the novel, and served as a fitting tribute to Moore's work.
*there were others, of course, but Moore was arguably the most popular...and prolific.

But that's what I think at least Cindy is trying to do. She has courage to stand up and fight against all odds, keeps on and on to the point she tires many of us out, but what a shame. She rejects both parties be on her own. So that's pretty close...yet so far.
Yes, you're right. We're Sorely Lacking A V

I stepped out for a walk at lunch today here in Seattle. I work across the street from the Federal Building. Parked around the street were various vehicles with the logo "Homeland Security." Who ever could have imagined such a fascist phrase would become the official name for our national security apparatus? I felt like I was in an alternate reality.

10. I had a similar experience recently. |
|
Here I am in Temecula, Ca., of all places (1-1/2 north of San Diego - inland)(19 miles through a mountain range east of Capistrano), and I'm driving down city streets. A van drove by with a big "HOMELAND SECURITY," and this law school grad went home and told Hubby, "WTF? When I was a social worker, Border Patrol drove around, but that was as close to Federales as we got out here in SoCal." I had to resist every urge to flip him off (and I used to work with law enforcement every day, and counted them as my friends). It's a different world.

A little bird told me that a re-make of the mini-series 'The Stand' has been given the green light and casting is currently underway.
Although I enjoyed the original, I thought there were a few actors that miscast-- Molly Ringwald stands out to me as a "WTF were they thinking?". Also, I think they chose someone who merely didn't suck for the role of the Dark Man-- my thinking would be to get Christopher Walken to play the part. It's his eyes, ya know?

Actually, I kind of liked the "ordinariness" of Jamie Sheridan; it keeps you mindful that devils (evil) could easily be walking among us completely unrecognized. Think Karl Rove, George W. Bush, George Will, etc. ...
