" Special prosecutor weighed for Gonzales"
WASHINGTON - Angry senators suggested a special prosecutor should investigate misconduct at the Justice Department, accusing Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Tuesday of deceit on the prosecutor firings and President Bush's eavesdropping program.

Democrats and Republicans alike hammered Gonzales in four hours of testimony as he denied trying, in 2004, to push a hospitalized former attorney general into approving a counterterror program that the Justice Department then viewed as illegal.

Gonzales, alternately appearing wearied and seething, vowed anew to remain in his job even as senators told him outright they believe he is unqualified to stay.

He would not answer numerous questions, including whether the Bush administration would bar its U.S. attorneys from pursuing contempt charges against former White House officials who have defied congressional subpoenas for their testimony.

6. Towards the end of today's hearing, Leahy mentioned
that they were considering asking Fitzgerald in to testify.. He asked if Gonzo would have any objections... Gonzo said, since he was recused in that matter.. It wasn't his call.

2. When will they just do something?
Stop considering. Stop thinking about considering. Stop evaluating or assessing. We don't need talking points. Just do it. Appoint the special prosecutor and get rolling.

There are ways to enforce the contempt of congress charge against Miers. This is not new. It doesn't need considering or planning or evaluating. The reason the WH thumbs its nose at the dems and congress is that the congress hasn't done anything. Take action, for goodness sake.

4. Hire a staff and impeach Alberto. The evidence ia already there.
In mounting a defense he might learn something about the law everybody else has to follow.

9. Is this a pre-requisite for impeachment? If not, what are the reasons for
not FIRING the man responsible for politicizing the Justice Dept, for probably breaking laws wrt FISA law, for flaunting Geneva Conventions resulting in the actual torture of human beings, for lying to congress, etc..

If impeachment investigations begin, do we think the WH would rather have all the dirty laundry aired or would they ask him to resign? Resignation, surely. Then we would be rid of him. Otherwise, he'll be there till January 2009 fighting contempt and perjury charges...then he'll be pardoned.
