More people would be involved in the nomination process because that would be the only way to influence an election result.

I asked the Original Post question because political parties aren't government agencies. If their leaders wanted them to merge, then nothing but some kind of political party anti-trust law could stop them. Is there such a law?

Actually, if the two parties were to merge, we'd have a dominant party system as seen in some nations like in Egypt where the National Democratic Party does have opposition but wins 90%+ of the seats or like Mexico with PRI before 2000.

There would still be contested elections and with the lack of tactical voting due to one large party, the Libertarians and Greens would wins seats in Congress but the large new party would win somewhere around 70% of the seats and the party presidential primaries the only real election campaign.

Expect such a mega-party to have an Orwellian-style misnomer such as United Party or National Party or some such.
