"You know why I call (Al Gore) Ozone Man?" Bush said. "This guy is so far out in the environmental extreme, we'll be up to our neck in owls and outta work for every American. He is way out, far out, man." - George H. W. Bush, 1992

=====

Budapest - Up to 500 people have died in a heatwave in the past week in Hungary, the country's chief medical officer said on Tuesday as Europe struggled to cope with extreme weather conditions.

Soaring temperatures across southern and eastern Europe claimed scores of lives, including in southern Italy where a wildfire on Tuesday burned two people alive in their car and suffocated another two when it spread to a beach nearby.

At the same time, Britain struggled to cope with the worst flooding for 60 years, which has seen some towns turned into islands and hundreds of thousands of homes left without power or running water.

Hungary's chief medical officer Ferenc Falus said that during last week from July 15 to July 22 the heat in central Hungary "contributed to the early death of 230 people, which nationally means about 500 deaths".

Do they?

6. Very unlikely in Hungary
AC is pretty rare in private homes in Europe (the southernmost countries like Italy or Spain have traditional construction that stays relatively cool in the summer, and/or siesta traditions), but Hungary still has a fairly low GDP, and AC would be a luxury for most households, I think.

The annoying thing is that if AC becomes a requirement for normal living, it means more electricity use, which probably means more fossil fuel burning, at the moment ...

7. AC at home is a luxury
and more and more Americans will not be able to afford it in future. Plenty of people die in American heat waves. We better start getting used to living with less, so we have enough to go around in extreme weather situations. This suffering in Europe shouldn't come as a surprise.

Just commenting...:)

5. While western US burns and bakes and Australia dries up
I assume Australia still hasn't had much rain.
This is the beginning edge of the disaster ain't it?

3. pattern of ridicule and fear
they have a pattern of ridiculing those who they disagree with(usually those who tell the truth) then putting some kind of fear or threats to scare people from supporting that person or their ideas.
