What is the deal with telling people to "fuck"?

Fuck Nader. Fuck Cindy Sheehan. Fuck Medea Benjamin. Is that a command or are people that use such slogans telling the addressee to "fuck off"? How does one "fuck off" by the way? Wouldn't the more appropriate phrase be "fuck on"? I mean, if you "fuck off" you aren't really fucking anymore anyway. And I thought that fucking was a good thing. Why use it with such a negative conotation? I swear, I don't think I will ever understand humans.

1. The original meaning of "fuck" is "to beat against".

This is not to be taken literally, but is meant as a metaphor of stopping their efforts.
