Would RFK Jr. run as a Democrat if he enters the race?
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 08:07 AM by RFKin2008
Naturally, we would expect anyone with the last name of Kennedy to run as a Democrat. They've helped shape the party's history for 75 years.

But I'm hearing quite a bit of chatter lately that if RFK Jr. runs, he may not declare as a Democrat. Shocking!

The Greens want him as their "dream candidate," apparently. In some ways that makes sense for Bobby, given his 20+ years working for environmental causes, but I'd be sad to see him part ways with the party if he goes Green.

Then again, he may not choose any party affiliation at all and run as an Independent.

We ask everyone who signs our petition to draft Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to tell us which party they would like to see him represent. The results thus far are evenly divided, 50% Democrat, 50% Independent.

Only in today's political climate would a Kennedy even *consider* running as anything other than a Democrat, so all this is rather fascinating to me. Your thoughts?

1. he would run as a dem if he did run, but he's not going to run
and if he did run for something, I doubt he would start off with president of the USA. He probably would, like his uncles start a little lower, maybe congress or even Senator. He might even want to run for some state office.

6. There was some talk here ( NYS) of him challenging...
Clinton for SEN, or running for GOV or even state ATTY GEN. But NYS DEM party is currently riding high with an abundance of electoral... if not governmental... talent. There is literally no room for RFK at the state-wide level.

Unless he's willing to start with a House seat ( and his brother already did that so it wouldn't be much of an ego-rush if he succeeded) he's kind of shut-out of options for elected office.

8. He has never
expressed any interest in running against Senator Clinton. He has mentioned that if Senator Clinton becomes President Clinton, he might run for that office.

3. It's a no-go either way, seems to me.
1. I don't believe he'd sabotage the nat'l DEM ticket by running as an IND. He's committed to the environment but he is not a fool ( unlike a certain past Green party nominee) and knows he will hurt the very cause to which he's committed by launching an IND bid.

2. If he's going to run as a DEM... shouldn't he run for Sen/Gov/ House/ Mayor first to establish a sort of track record? Unless he simply wants to air environmental issues in the debates... but isn't it a little late for that?

It's not totally clear from your post : you *are* talking about the presidency. Yes?

4. Exactly. He is smart enough to know that such a third party run would do what Nader did in '00
take enough votes from the Dems to allow Bushites to get in. Then where would RFK's environmental agenda be?
