I propose a moratorium on comparing onseself to Rosa Parks
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 10:02 AM by northernsoul
Just as a comparison of one's opponent to Hitler is a nearly sure-fire hallmark of a bad argument, I submit that comparison of oneself to Rosa Parks is an equal indicator of a position lacking merit.

Discuss.

1. Can I compare myself to Abraham Lincoln?
no wait - how about Emperor Xerxes, immortalized in Frank Miller's 300?

Or 80's balladeer Huey Lewis?

4. Why would you want to compare yourself to Huey Lewis?
Granted, it's a few steps better than comparing yourself to Michael Bolton. *shudder*

...but I'm torn, torn, torn. I like Barry Manilow.

So it goes.

2. How "bout we just stop comparing ourselves to anyone else? You're absolutely
right in any case.

5. I agree and I disagree...
...I agree on the Rosa Parks point. Too many people use her memory as an atom to prevent themselves from really discussing whatever issue cause her name to be brought up.

On the point of Herr Hilter, though, I've read Rise and Fall of the Third Reich more than once. The strategy and tactics of some who have power and seek to keep it on a permanent opinion, in my unvarnished opinion, approximate the moves that the late Mr. Shirer recorded so closely that it's time, I think, that Godwin's Law got a conditional repeal. We must call things what they are sometimes, and not pussyfoot around about what they are.

Just sayin'.

12. I hear ya
My true appeal is have people think twice about comparing themselves to extraordinary historical characters acting in unique circumstances in order to score cheap rhetorical points.

6. sometimes the comparison to Hitler is apt, it has just been used so arbitrarily it's lost its value

10. Exactly. Drawing parallels is more valid and effective.
Lord knows there are enough parallels to keep us occupied.

14. I just might break out that book again...
...I think it's high time for a Rise and Fall of the Third Reich rereading.

Comforting thing is, you always know how that thing ends.

27. read the "War Propaganda" chapter of Mein Kampf to see how apt the analogy to Bush is
except that Bush himself is an inarticulate dolt and Hitler actually had the power of human speech.

19. careless Hitler comparisons remind me of the boy who cried wolf
I'm not saying that analogies to Hitler are never, ever warranted - but they better be highly well-considered and articulated to have any persuasive power.

11. Sarah Vowell has an essay in her book "The Partly Cloudy Patriot" in which she makes the same point
about people who compare themselves to Rosa Parks (including Ted Nugent, who referred to himself as "Rosa Parks with a loud guitar").
