and the Thames is flooding... to the tune of 6£

Many of the Mediterranean countries do not have AC:(

Our disasters are bad, but we rarely hear of others' disasters...and according to a BBC thing I saw yesterday, when we DO report them, the report usually ends up with a comparison to ours..and then a full-on report on how their disaster affects US :eyes:

5. If the thermohaline circulation does shut down...
What must be remembered is that these changes will be superimposed on the pattern of warming due to the enhanced greenhouse effect. Over Europe, then, little change or slight warming would probably be expected if the THC collapsed, with cooling restricted to the ocean areas. Associated changes in storminess and precipitation are even harder to estimate. Link

7. And an opposing viewpoint
The consequences of a shut-down in the Atlantic Ocean thermohaline circulation are uncertain. Paleoclimatological evidence shows that disruption of the thermohaline circulation has happened before. Deep ocean sediments dating from the last Ice Age (~11,000 year ago), suggest that the fresh water run-off from melting ice masses decreased sea water density sufficiently to cause a breakdown of ocean overturning. What followed was a European winter 10 degrees Celsius below normal and cold spells that lasted for hundreds of years. Link

46. Yeah, it could be really, really bad
Or it could be normal.

The cynic in me suspects it will be far from normal.

But like Mongo said, "I am only pawn in game of life." All I can do is listen to the scientists and try to determine the best course of action for me and my family.

10. Every desert dweller who has to be outdoors during the summer
knows to cover up. The ones who don't are the ones who end up with the skin cancers.

What you can do for her is make some 3/4 length sleeve, gauzy tunics and send them along with a brimmed hat.

I live in gauzes in the summertime.

FWIW, I spent my first two summers out here with no cooler. The second one saw a peak temperature of 107. Even with humidity under 15%, I thought I was gonna die. My sympathy to the southern Europeans who are enduring this stuff at higher humidities. Soaking one's head and walking around with wet hair helps.

One of those 'granny gardener' hats. She likes it. I'm going to ask if the next time we go we can stop in one of the big stores in the capital city and buy an AC unit. Small and energy efficient. It's the least I can do!

I know I could do more or better but they are elderly and so far away in a fairly remote village.

Funny...I always thought that only Republicans deny science and call those that acknowledge it as "freaks".

Global warming is happening, so I do not see why you would use such loaded language to describe those that are following it.

If you disagree that these events in Europe have anything to do with global warming, then say so. As is, you are being divisive and rude.

However, you will find that I made no such rule, but still found my observation "interesting".

As do many DUers I am sure.

And you are still rude and divisive. Not exactly a welcome addition to the community, in my opinion.

You continue to deny the results of countless years of scientific research on a progressive board, and I will put you on my ignore list so you don't have to deal with my brownshirt tactics, any more.

Happy?

You do not seem to have anything to contribute, anyways.

28. You're right about the politics. But the evidence is quite strong now.
The atmospheric carbon isotope ratio has shifted just as predicted by global warming research. It is different than the signature for natural periods of warming. This information can be readily found on line.

But the mandatory-belief thing sucks. This is a time for a commitment to education on these issues, not demands for belief. Better an inquiring disbeliever than an accepting believer.

(Scholars and Rogues. A good synopsis of the arguments.)

I remember that the people at the U of Arizona were telling me that this is something we should be looking for, when I was visiting one of the climate labs down there in 1992. I've been doing research in other areas over the past few years so I hadn't been keeping up with the literature -- I'm going to head over to the atmospheric journals now to get back up to speed!

For awhile, back in the mid-90s, my prof was talking about wanting to track the 13/12 ratio in atmospheric methane. After looking into what would be required, he ended up moving onto something else (and he's not a guy who gives up easily!).

He really wanted me to switch my research area and team up with him -- I'm actually glad I didn't, because it would have taken a lot more skill than I've got (theory and lab). As it was, I ran overtime on my dissertation.

50. You were young and healthy, presumably.
The old and the infirm often die in large numbers during such heat waves. Nearly 15,000 died in Paris during the record heat of August 2003.

Being in a place that's hot for months on end and never cold is much different than being in a zone with dramatic temperature swings. The body often isn't able to properly adapt to the extremes.

79. A thermometer behind a Stevenson screen>
or just a thermometer? The former can be used to compare the weather in 2 different places, and relates to the temperatures given by met offices and weather forecasts; the latter just tells you how hot the thermometer has been, recently.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevenson_screen

37. It's only 82 here in Alabama
It's been very cool this summer. The thermometer in my back yard rarely registers anything over 90, with most highs in the mid to high 80s. It's been a strange summer with cool temps and very little rain.

43. I passed through Oxford today around 1:00
The flooding must have happened after that, or else it didn't affect too many people...road traffic was relatively light. However, it was raining as I drove through and almost all the way to London. Southeast England has been drier than the rest of the country.

I saw several fields flooded in the Cotswolds yesterday. Tomorrow rains are supposed to be heavier. As I had mentioned in a post the other day, it has rained in the UK every day that I've been here except yesterday, and it was raining heavily weeks before I had arrived, so that's two months straight of constant rain.

Yesterday droves of folks were "flooding" the Chatsworth House (Pride and Prejudice) to picnic and bag some rays for a change of pace. I was surprised to see stars in the sky last night for the first time in over a month. It didn't last long.

59. I don't get the island part of the "duuh." Britain does have a humid climate, but so does the
Atlantic coast, from Algeria to Jutland. The floods are more like the Rhineland floods which regularly inundate everything from Trier to Bonn and the streets of Colgne are covered over with makeshift elevated sidewalks going to the Dom.

Now that is unusual for the UK. Not for Germany in the spring, but this is late summer.

Last year the heat wave in London was overwhelming, and this year the rain in the West. I am waiting on the Thames to freeze over at Greenwich next winter!

45. I feel bad for them..
After Katrina I had no electricity for two weeks and it was probably 90 degrees or more in the shade. My grandmother had refused to evacuate and as the days went by you could literally see her dying. At that point phone service was sporadic and it fortunately came up long enough to arrange a hotel room for her. I strongly believe that is what saved her life.

We didn't know it at the time, but my grandmother has dementia. And after the storm, she dramatically declined mentally. I suspect that after this heatwave is over there will be an increase in dementia diagnoses.

58. I just got back
Was on a 2 week trip to greece and turkey and italy. thought it was gonna die in athens, it was like 42 degrees there. And the AC thing is right. You'd walk by a store that felt cool, but the air conditioning was only in the doorway and it was still stifling inside. good to be back in the USA.
