US agency downplays memo flagging airport terror threat
Wed Jul 25, 9:14 AM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Transportation Security Administration on Wednesday sought to downplay concerns over an internal memo in which it raised concerns about a possible increased terror risk at US airports.

The memo, reprinted widely in US media, said TSA staff and police had found items at airports resembling improvised explosive device (IED) components, including wires, switches, tubes, cell phone components and dense clay-like substances.

"The unusual nature and increase in number of these improvised items raise concern and TSA personnel should continue vigiliance for groupings of ordinary items that look like IED components," reads the reprinted TSA alert.

But the TSA itself later said the warning was routine and should not be misconstrued as a response to a credible threat. .....(more)
