Why do they still support him? The article I want to see...
Looking over the news of the 22-17 party-line vote to forward contempt charges on Meyers and Bolten, I was wondering, what hold does the administration still have over the Republicans?

Over an AD&D game last night we debated what the influence still was. I have three former Republicans in my game. (Now Libertarian, Indie and Democrat.) They thought that with 25% approval numbers, the Republlicans would be comitting suicide in the fall by not prosecuting the president. The view was that public opinion was now irrelevent since real POWER was concentrated in this president's hands, and more importantly, in the hands of his backers.

"So what if he is unpopular," one said. "Cross him, and you'll never work in that town again."

So what are the levers? Jobs? Campaign funds? Lobbying? Or as on player put it, "People would have to know that they supported Bush to get pissed off, and who is going to tell them that?"

:-(

4. According to the same survey...
"Among Republicans (30% of adults registered to vote in the survey), 68% approve of the way Bush is handling his job and 26% disapprove. Among Democrats (37% of adults registered to vote in the survey), 1% approve and 97% disapprove of the way Bush is handling his job. Among independents (33% of adults registered to vote in the survey), 18% approve and 79% disapprove of the way Bush is handling his job as president.

Overall, 23% of Americans say that they approve of the way George W. Bush is handling the economy, 73% disapprove, and 4% are undecided. Among registered voters, 23% approve and 72% disapprove of the way Bush is handling the economy."

But that doesn't tell me why the politicians, who answer to everyone, are still in line with their base. It looks like political suicide to me.

5. Simple. Republicans elect Republicans.
It's not like there's an equal amount of Repubs and Democrats in each district or state.

6. One word
Wiretaps!

Who do you think the NSA was spying on, not Joe the Ragman, and from all the number 2 AQ leaders that they keep killing it wasn't the terrorists, so how about Republicans with nasty skeletons in their closets that they don't want the folks back home to find out about.

Just a theory.
