I committed an act of vandalism today
I saw a bumper sticker that said "Abortion stops a beating heart".. I took a marker and crossed out abortion and wrote in War and I crossed out a and added an s after heart. I don't feel terrible about it either. I did not put a mark on the vehicle, just the sticker..

1. I don't suggest repeating that act.
Respect an individual's property. You can still ridicule their viewpoints.

You will probably be chastised by some but I say...Go You! Right on. This person wants to stop my beating heart because if I had not been able to have an abortion I would have committed suicide.

22. I put a swastika on a Poppy/Potatoehead billboard that was on a busy freeway back in '92
I used duct tape, so I didn't permanently damage the billboard. I do have a picture of it somewhere. I felt quite proud of it at the time, but I am ambivalent about it now. I also put the swastika on backwards. I wasn't up on my swastika etiquette. It stayed that way for about a week.

The damage those clowns do to my civil liberties is a higher crime in my opinion than the defacement, which was actually wrong.

In other words, they are more wrong than you so it's ok...?

which don't coincide with your own. You make what I consider the most egregious intellectual error possible--the ridiculous assumption that you are right about everything, and people who disagree with you can't possibly be smarter than you. I prefer to keep Socratic ignorance close to my heart. It's very possible we agree on most class issues, but the supression of opinion, no matter how stupid, I cannot abide.

Political affiliations/ideologies which are regressive, oppressive, exploitive and have caused incalculable damage to humanity. Criminal intellectual pathologies cultivated by the ruling class to perpetuate its power. I do not assume I am right about everything, I am human after all. But, the ideology I support, left/progressive, is without question more "right" than the right wing. How can you suggest otherwise?

60. What I'm suggesting
is that, although I certainly think I'm right, I could easily be wrong about anything, or even everything.

And where exactly are the limits on this suppression of speech? Do moderates get to talk in your world? Social Democrats? Fundamentalist Muslims? Would Orwell get to publish? Adam Smith? Chris Hitchens?

Sorry, but I don't trust you to filter my world. It strikes me that your view holds the seeds of the very oppression you oppose. Think Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin etc.

64. You seem determined to blur it.
I always thought that oppression of unpopular speech was one of the things that compelled me to oppose the right. I oppose the unfair advantages that money and the corporate oligarchy bring to right wing opinion, but I believe that if the playing field were levelled, the right wouldn't stand a chance, because our ideas are better. Censoring their opinions would only lend them legitimacy.

In other words, I do oppose oppression of the right wing. I am for beating them fair and square.

I felt if they truly were "Pro-Life" they would have no objection to my alteration of their sticker. I am amazed my rambling got so many to reply though.

77. It Was the "Right" Sentiment Expressed the "Wrong" Way
OP, they had the right to express their belief, abhorrent though it may have been to you. You had no right to vandalize their display, which was posted on their property.

You want to make a statement about this, then get your own (opposing) bumper sticker. And hope no one writes on it.

Slackmaster, this just reminds me of the overly righteous groups going around vandalizing SUVs in the car lots. Now, believe what you want about environmentalism, but that's just unmitigated vandalism, and it makes environmental activists in general look like crazy zealots. Wonderful for credibility on the big issues, especially if it gets copycats doing it to personal vehicles. And it does.

You want to make a statement about earth-friendly cars, get a hybrid. And hope the guy who had to shell out a $500 deductible getting his vandalized SUV repaired (which he might not be able to afford to change right now) doesn't decide it looks like what the culprit who smashed his car drove.

67. This is why I don't put bumper stickers on my car
because people who disagree with me feel it's ok to change the message or worse yet, damage my car.

It's wrong when either side does it. God knows I've felt like doing what you did but I have enough self control to not touch another's property.

If someone here had a stop the war bumper sticker marked up this place would be going crazy - what's the difference?

68. No chastising here
If someone defaced a bumpersticker on my car, I'd go "Oh, shit" and get another sticker; I usually get mine free. Big fucking deal.

71. what was on the bumper sticker doesn't make the act any less wrong.
Vandalism is immoral no matter what, what you vandalize doesn't matter.

74. "Vandalism is immoral no matter what"
what if someone made a statue to commemorate child rape?

would it be immoral to vandalize that?

76. Yes.
Having a protest in order to get it taken down would be the right thing to do.

It just justifies the wingnuts doing that to us.
