Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Following President Bush's attack on Democrats at the White House's rose garden this morning for not backing a bill for a pay raise for troops. Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement saying that Bush was against the bill before he was for it.
"While Democrats have fought for a pay raise for our troops all along, the President was against the pay raise before he was for it. Two months ago, his Administration explicitly opposed Democratic efforts to give our troops a 3.5 percent raise and threatened to veto legislation if the pay raise was passed by Congress, calling it 'unnecessary.'
She continued, "Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans, led by the President, have thrown up road blocks and filibustered the efforts of Democrats to support our troops by rebuilding our military strength, changing direction in Iraq, and refocusing our efforts to protect Americans from terrorism.
Pelosi said, "The partisan attacks by President Bush only demonstrate his Administration's unwillingness to work with Congress to give our men and women in uniform the support they deserve, including a new direction in Iraq."
Bush told the audience of veterans and their families that Democrats conducted a political debate on the war while stalling action on money to upgrade equipment and give troops more take home pay.
