2. Here's the deal: we're a society, and civilized societies |
|
take care of all their members.
We educate all our kids and we should take care of all our sick and homeless people. The UK, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, all have single payer health care. Why not the US?
Serving 20 + years in the military to earn health care for life is a pretty sweet deal. Don't get me wrong, I was a military brat and I know the downsides of a military career.
But the rest of the world can work 20, 30, 40 years at a job and once they retire, they have to a lot to keep their health insurance. They also pay $200-300 per month for medical insurance the whole time they're working, and many of them don't earn any more than enlisted personnel. Yet when they retire and their income goes down they have to pay more for insurance. Tell me that makes sense.

You would be amazed at their reaction after seeing this movie. They have all agreed that we have a big problem with our present day health care. This is coming from people who once thought they hated Michael Moore..

But I disagree.
I'm tired of being told that I'm unAmerican because I believe that this country that I love can be a better place, including universal health care.
I'd like for somebody else to feel the discomfort for once.

25. My only request with universal healthcare |
|
is that you can never be associated with a political party via your benefits number. The last thing I want is to receive or be declined health care based on how I vote in an election. As an example I am sure if I had cancer and this admin was in power and knew how I voted I would be rejected for health care benefits.

I think it should be some souped up version of our SS card.
This card would have your medical history on it, plus your meds and any allergies. That way, any MD you go to would be all caught up.

The card should only have a number and no name association.

I admit I haven't thought about an entirely new system all the way through.
But honestly, I don't see this as an issue. There are reasons now people get turned down that have nothing to do with political affiliation. I don't see that it would be a problem then either.

36. No but neither does an Airline Carrier, you are put on a no fly list by a Government Official. |
|
And if a Government Official can put you on a no fly list they can put you on a no health care list. I don't believe universal health care is bad, I only think Governments can be bad and would deny health care to those who may act as a threat to their power.

37. But we don't have nationalized airlines |
|
We have private airlines. Besides the no fly list, they are free to refuse service to anyone for any reason, because they are private entities. Just like a bar or restaurant is free to throw out any patron who causes too much trouble.
I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying that's what we got right now.

39. But individuals on no fly list are not there because a private airline is refusing them service. |
|
They are there because the Government is listing them as a threat to the nation. If the Government has the power to restrict you from moving about the country or to another country I am sure they would have the ability to restrict what one receives in health care. The only solution in my opinion is a blind health care system that offers health care to everyone no matter who you are or where you are from.

I honestly don't understand your anxiety over comparing universal healthcare to the no fly list.
The IRS doesn't look for bad people to punish when a party is out of power.
You SS benefits aren't calculated by your voting record when you reach retirement age.
Besides access to health care is already a UN listed human right. Remember, the folks in Gitmo get free health care and we do not. And they don't vote Dem. ;-)
I will say that all that crap associated with that Goddammed patriot act, needs to be repeeled a the first opportunity, if that's what you are thinking.
Edit: I'll add one more. We also have the Do Not Call list. Arguably one of the things the * misadmin has gotten right. Are you on it? Have telemarketing weasels stopped harrassing you? Or have you noticed more calls lately?

|
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 11:26 PM by MiltonF
Getting less Social Security than I planned could ruin my year. But not getting that heart transplant that I need could wreck my life. Seeing how this Admin has conducted itself in the last 6 years has told me all I need to know on what to expect from a government. Imagine a government that no longer worries about swing voters simply because they know if they deny enough elderly health care they can kill them off before an election. Universal Health Care needs to be blind, it should not care about your color, age, nationality, religion, political affiliation, sexual preference or how much money you make.

38. It's almost a no-brainer. If the Dems can pass and get universal health care legislation signed... |
|
people will wonder what took us so long to do something other nations have already done with success.
We'll be a healthier, happier, and more productive society. The key is convincing the majority of people that profit should not be part of the equation when we are talking about life or death. People need to see national health care as an inalienable right: part of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As Michael Moore has said, we don't expect the police or fire department or public education system to generate a profit. Why should our health be any different?
Also, if Dems can really get this thing passed, we will enjoy supermajorities for years to come. I even think we'd win back the South.
