I have eliminated soda from my diet...
After hearing how much damage soda can do to a person's metabolism in regards to heart disease I decided to take this action for a few reasons.

1)I'm overweight.
2)At high risk for diabetes.
3)Was drinking almost a case of coke a week.

I knew beforehand that my intake wasn't a good thing, but as with a lot of things I needed an extra push to make the right decision for my health. I bought extra milk, a case of water and a will be drinking ice tea, too.

There have been a lot of articles talking about the sudden rise of heart disease in women and this additional information about sodas really got me thinking more about my future health.

Has anyone else considered the same thing since this new study came out?

Alternatively - in ANY full-service bar - 3/4ths tonic water with 1/4th orange juice is really a good bar drink.

Because I was shocked that diet soda was no better for people - assuming this is the same study. I personally have issues with carbonation so I was hoping that this was the case!

72. I don't think it was the carbonation...
I believe the culprit was in the caramel used for coloring in the case of the colas.

I hardly ever drink any kind of soda. Mostly I just drink water. I drink coffee in the mornings, and sometimes later in the day. I do a 'fruit juice' drink with my morning vitamin. No sodas in my house, though.

I try, I really try.
I keep it most days to one soda a day. But I hate coffee, not really a fan of hot drinks anyway, and really look forward to my morning coke.

I'm trying to order club soda if we go out to eat. At home I drink water, with maybe a splash of iced tea for some flavor.

But oh, I love that one coke!

60. I agree - just want to add that there are even worse issues with DIET soda
The Harvard Nurse study found that consumption of diet soda correlated strongly with weight gain and related conditions. Further studies seem to show that the artificial sweetness teaches your body that sweet = few or no calories so you do not get satiated as easily. Plus you get hungry for the sugar that wasn't in the soda. The effect carries over to other sweet foods whether they are artifically sweetened or real fructose.

98. i too used to enjoy my cokes
full HFCS ones too! it was the HFCS that really pushed me to cut them out for the most part. i used to have one in the morning (instead of coffee). everyone at work would laugh about it. now i drink coffee, water, and sometimes lemonade. i think i was "addicted" to the caffeine and carbonation, but since i've cut them out, i've lost a few pounds.

i've noticed that more foods are cutting out the HFCS and using sugar instead, which is a big difference to me. hfcs is the culprit in many of the new cases of diabetes, imo. many families that have no history of diabetes in the past are now coming up with them.

CONGRATULATIONS! :hi: it's not easy breaking a habit of many years like that!

And I haven't missed it. Every once in a while, I'll take a taste of someone else's soda, and it's like drinking a glass of syrup.

I find sparkling water with a little lime or lemon in it to be very satisfying, since I like the carbonation.

7. there's this powdered rasberry iced tea mix I like, not sure who makes it cause its offbrand
not too sweet, so its not like koolaid by any means, and its pretty refreshing, especially in the hot summer months.

If you check around the juice and drink section of your store, you should find something like it.

Wish I could be more specific.

The name brand might be Lipton, IIRC, but not sure.

Water is probably the best thing.

Today, I have drank 130 oz. of water, not all at once, but through the course of the day. This amount of water is about what I drink everyday.

Water, coffee, unsweetened iced tea w/lemon are my non-alcoholic drinks of choice.

84. mmmm Chocolate soy...
When I was living in CA I would buy a thing of chocolate soy since it only came in vanilla and chocolate. Soy milk w/o flavoring is pretty bland.

When I remember I do try to drink more water than soda> I switched to diet from sugared about a year ago, and it's made a large difference (no pun intended) in my weight. This is going to put a major kink in my drinking habits, but I suppose it's better to suffer than to croak! The downside is I like the carbonization of the drink. I do NOT like soda water however. Maybe I'll pick up 7-up... if only they made better diet drinks here. your choice is water or diet cola (coke)

I gave up high-fructose corn-syrup based soft drinks in January of 1980, for the same reasons you stated. I was drinking 4-6 cans a day, just about every time I passed by a vending machine.

I drink seltzer and ice tea now and wished I'd given up the HFCS stuff decades earlier. It's never too late to "break the habit!"

had no stomach problems since. I mix iced tea, lemonade, orange juice with a dash of almond flavoring and it is delicious. I worry about my daughter-in-law and her son. They inhale something called Sundrop on a daily basis. I am beginning to think they are addicted to it. I question them on their use of so much but they keep drinking it.

32. This is going to sound weird, but I can't drink carbonated beverages anymore...
I usually drink tea or coffee, and always had a problem drinking Colas or any other carbonated drink from a can, because it causes severe hiccups for me. Usually pouring it in a glass, over ice, reduces this. Anyways, a few weeks ago, I catsitted for my Grandmother, who was out of town, and the only drink, besides milk, that she buys is Pepsi, so, I drank one glass, after the first SWALLOW, I had hiccups, and it didn't stop until the next morning, no sleep for me that night.

I usually don't drink soda, in fact, I think that was the first I drank it in like 9 months or so, no more soda for me, not like it is a great loss.

But occasionally, I must have my Pepsi! I usually have a gallon of iced tea, 1/2 gallon of herbal (peach or mango) tea, and of course my Brita filtered water (with a slice of lime, excellent on a hot day).

My husband was diagnosed with an aneurysm a while back, not major but needed to be watched. So he's lost weight and we are working on quitting smoking.

But damn if I'll give up my Alaskan Amber or Pepsi!

There are a lot of great tasting herbal teas out there, and you make iced herbal the same was as regular iced tea. We love it. Wishing you the best, cynatnite, with your new dietary plans. You'll surprise yourself!

I hired a personal trainer and it has been money well spent. But I was still drinking diet pepsi everyday. So we have given up the soda and so far son has to work on keeping his part of the deal.

Addictions are so tough to kick. Your post might help somebody else. Yeah I found that too--best to leave sugar water to the hummingbirds. It's no good for humans who aren't running marathons. Also avoiding those 'natural' sodas based on juices--some have as much as 35 carbs--they aren't much better than Coke.

If you miss the caffeine as you go cold turkey...there are so many good teas out there.

47. High Fructose Corn Syrup
Read your food labels. It's usually the first ingredient in soda pop, and unfortunately, many other foods.

A year and and a half ago, I vowed to cut it out completely. That's a tall order, but I did pretty well. I dropped fifty pounds. Twenty to go, and I'm almost back to my high school size.

I am convinced that the introduction of high fructose corn syrup into everyday American diets starting in the 1970's is a big part of the obesity/heart disease/diabetes epidemic in Amerika.

53. I stopped my fairly massive soda consumption last year...
...and have replaced it with water and green tea. Water...it may not have the "zip" we want but appropriate amounts of it are pretty much essential to healthy diet; to keep us healthy now, and as one more preventative component in the fight against future health problems.

If you are already overweight and at high risk for diabetes then your decision was especially wise, and I applaud it whole heartedly :applause:

And, you know what? After some time away from the sodas I don't miss them at all...

Keep up the good work!

:D :hi:

The most I would ever drink is maybe 3-5 sodas in a week, and that was at my worst. Whenever I am at Restaraunts, I choose Iced Tea. At home I drink kool-aid without the sugar, this is 0 calories.

A 16 oz. coke is 200 calories. If you were drinking 12 oz. it would mean cutting 3600 calories per week. I used the larger coke for the shock value. :D Imagine, you're cutting about 2 days worth of meals each week just by dropping the soda. It seems to help make it all the more worthwhile. Good luck.

three days. Lots of calories there. I drink decaf tea with just a pinch of sugar and lots of lemon instead. I still get some of my coffee with sugar habit in the morning.

I feel better not having the ups and downs with the sugar load. But my body did miss the caffeine for the first day or so, so you may have issues with that if you had caffeinated drinks.

i can't honestly say it made any difference in my health but i did save a shitload of money!

a case of coke a week, a 12 pack, isn't so extreme, but it's still around $4 a week you could put in a fund and at the end of the year it's $200 you can treat yourself to something special

63. I switched to diet colas a few months ago
And dropped over 10 pounds with NO effort in a month. It hasn't come back, and I continue to lose pounds. I cut out corn syrup (which is hard when you consider its prevalence) too.

That study came with misleading headlines. There's no correlation between diet sodas and weight gain/obesity/diabetes. There IS a correlation between the OTHER stuff people eat WITH the diet sodas. It gives many a false sense of security by cutting the calories from diet colas, and so they overcompensate in other areas. Diet sodas are 99% water, and the artificial sweeteners cannot cause weight gain when they comprise a calorie or so of content.

I usually make a pot of coffee every day, I will drink 2 or 3 cups in the morning and then with the other 7 cups I will set them aside and refrigerate them to make ice coffee for when I want it. I usually add a little Agave Nectar to my Ice Coffee to add some sweetness and its great because it tastes like sugar but has no effect on your blood sugar level.

77. sodium benzoate
Research from a British university suggests that sodium benzoate, a common preservative found in many soft drinks, has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA.

http://vitalvotes.com/blogs/public_blog/Drink-Soda-and-Damage-Your-DNA-18075.aspx

Women who drink more than one can of sugar-filled soda a day might be increasing their chances of developing diabetes along with gaining weight.

A study showed that women who drank the minimum of one soda each day could increase their likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes by 85 percent over the women who drank less than one can a day.

Along with increasing the risk for diabetes, the high sugar and calorie content contained in sodas were also found to compound the risk of developing other chronic diseases such as obesity. These findings led researchers to believe the sugar found in soda and energy drinks could result in an overabundance of energy, which could trigger obesity and the packing on of extra pounds.

80. Avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup....HFCS
occasional soft drinks made with real cane sugar are okay...there are a few brands.

Read your labels....avoid HFCS and Diet anything (aspartame).

Both of those screw up your body.

Water. Filtered Tap water...tea with lemon and real sugar for a treat.

My favorite is to take a glass of ice cold filtered water and splash it with 100% grape juice and a little cranberry juice.

87. Coke in other countries tastes better
because they still use *real* sugar. Also, kosher Coke around Passover is still made with sugar. You can definitely taste the difference. HFCS has a bitter edge. I love Coca Cola, but limit myself to a once-in-awhile treat (usually when I'm suffering from motion sickness!)

Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 11:25 AM by calipendence
So if you want to get some soft drinks that don't have HFCS in them (or Diet drinks with the increasingly questionable usage of aspartane in it), you might want to try these out now. It looks like its now become more of a standard stocked item here in San Diego now. Look for cases of bottles with white labels stuck to them.

Therefore you can get the REAL thing when it comes to Coke that was what it was in the 70's and before that when it had real sugar in it.

93. heck, we shouldn't be quaffing pure sugar either
the body's not equipped to handle monstrous influxes of unfiltered glucose; hence the diabetes epidemic. But the "real thing" does taste good once in awhile.

Here in the NE, we must wait until Passover rolls around for Coke with sugar. Or...go to Europe! Yeah!

We'd make pitchers of Kool-Aid with a cup of sugar each. But we were very active kids. Still I don't believe sugar does anywhere near the harm HFCS does. There was no obesity/diabetes epidemic in the 70s.

108. Hi Stephanie!
Real sugar is OK for you (I eat lot of organic sweet things... ice cream, figs, cup cake), it's artificial sweetners are killing people and making them gain weight and creating major health problems. In 70's, soda and candies were made with real sugar and people didn't have over weight problems and health problems as they do now.
I have NEVER, EVER touched soda made with artificial sugar and never will.

I have to admit that it is my vice. I drink probably 3-4 2 liters a week of diet 7up. Obviously real soda has the empty calories and then other sodas have caffiene.

I'd love to kick the habit just to save the money, 1.28 each.

85. About that study...
All it did was look at the incidence of heart disease amongst people drinking regular and diet soda and compared the two. From what I can tell, other factors were not taken into account; frankly, it sounds like another case of media hype, trying to generate something out of nothing, and it's working.

Cutting down on everything except water is always healthy, but to say that ALL SODA CAUSES HEART ATTACKS is ludicrous without more evidence.

One thing that I loved to drink was Crystal Lite's instant ice tea mix. It's so good and handy to keep a pitcher of it in the fridge at all times. Only 5 calories!

100. Moderation
Like just about everything, I don't think drinking a soda here and there will put you the fast track to get a visit from the reaper. A case of Coke is...12 cans? About 1.8 cans a day...about 14 oz. I don't really see that as being excessive. I used to be a lot worse and would regularly go through a case in two days (or the equivelent). Gave me kidney stones. I still enjoy a Coke once or twice a week, I just make sure I drink something healthy as well. Extra cup of water. Glass of sugar-free cranberry. Bang out an extra 10 minutes on the stair-master.

Taking them out of your diet certainly won't hurt.
