The privacy that we cherish is the cloud enables these prohibited actions. Reading the posts on this thread is like visiting Freeperville. I though the "blame the victim" attitude was a repub trait. Guess not. I lost a lot of respect for people whom I had previously held in high regard.

Unlike pharmacists who refuse to dispense prescriptions because it violates their principles, the corrections officer was merely enforcing the rules of the penitentiary.

Part of the prison population is incarcerated for sex crimes (rape, incest, molestation, indecent exposure, etc.) These crimes have more to do with power over a victim than with sex. Knowing that one is under surveillance, and (perhaps) knowing that the corrections officer is a woman, the act of openly masturbating is an attack against the corrections officer who has to watch.

"I know you're watching me, now watch this. Does this offend you? Does this make you uncomfortable?"

While the prisoner in question was incarcerated for non-sexual crimes, he should not be allowed to openly masturbate, just as sexual offenders should not be allowed to engage in any deviant behavior while incarcerated. As I had posted earlier from the Miami Herald article, if one wants to masturbate, do it "privately" under the blanket.

Inmates indulge in masturbation for a variety of reasons, said Trudy Block-Garfield, a forensic psychologist.

"It's normal human behavior and these people are locked up, they're behind bars and it relieves a variety of stressors including boredom," she said. "But some aren't only doing it to relieve stress or tension or boredom. You have some who do it for shock value."

We had one inmate that loved to mess with the guards.

He had ordered one of those cylinders of Top rolling tobacco and papers, it was the cheapest way to enjoy smokes before tobacco was banned from the jail. The container looks like a coffee can except it is made of card board.

He was a known trouble matter so he was confined to his cell with the door locked and he would get bored. So he would sit on his bunk waiting for the guards to do the cell check and he would have that Tops can in his lap with the top on it.

Any way, he had smoked all of the tobacco and he tore the bottom off the container.

When the guard would come in the cell naturally he would ask what he was doing.

The inmate, all excitedly would tell the guard he caught a mouse and he was in the can. He'd say "tell ya what, I'll take the top off the can and you reach in and grab the mouse" -- well, it wasn't a mouse he had waiting in that can for the guard to grab hold of - :P

I don't know how many fell for his game, I didn't, my job was that of a guard so I didn't have to do the cell checks. I just happened to be in the tower one night when a rookie was doing the cell check and the tower guard was watching to see how he reacted to the "mouse".


Inmates do all sorts of things to be entertained and to find some pleasure. That female guard needs to find another job. Inmates are human and if that offended her, well, she should find some other way to bring home a pay check.

Have for a long time. Women working at men's prisons is actually an equal rights issue, fought for back in the 80's when women were fighting to be cops and firefighters.

I've worked with ex-cons, I know women who worked with ex-cons in transitional programs. I've transported mentally ill patients. I know lots of people in the field in all sorts of capacities. This is generally strange behavior. Women can gain the respect of inmates, or play power trips with them. I would bet this woman is playing power trips on these guys and they are retaliating.
