Anyone notice that there is no Repub response to the AP Doc Proving Gonzo lied? |
|
Repubs are reverting to bunker mentality of just oppose and obstruct on everything.
But when something like this comes down the pike and there is no immediate response, you know that there is a lot of hand-wringing going on as to what they should do.
The silence tells us all we need to know.

Gonzo has until, what, next week, to make "corrections" to the record???
That AP reporter did him a favor--pointing out his 'errors' so he can run, quick like a bunny, and correct them.
Don't count on 'silence' unless he refuses to issue corrections--which Congress allows him to do. He can actually EDIT that transcript, and the words coming out of his lying mouth then mean nothing...

8. Gonzo can issue 'corrections' to his testimony are reading the transcripts BUT... |
|
there is nothing Gonzo can do about the obvious intentional lies the told under specific questioning. These would not be minor corrections, he would have to entirely change his story to the scenario that he denied to Sen Schumer.
ANd there is no way he can reconcile his lie that the 'Gang of Eight' asked him to tell Ashcroft that they approved of the reauthorization he was asking him to sign.

20. He can play the Brain Fart game. Or the "I misunderstood the question" game. |
|
You are forgetting one important aspect about Gonzo--he has absolutely NO SHAME. None. He doesn't CARE what people think of him. And he will cheerfully stretch credulity to the breaking point...!
Note also how he answered questions. He parsed, with the 'I have no recollection of...'...'I may have thought that....'--he never, categorically said YES or NO. That's why Schumer got pissed at him during one exchange.

21. Go back and look at the TPM 'highlight reel' and you will see Schumer staked him down pretty good... |
|
He led him through multiple tellings of his 'new version' of events, so there could be no doubt exactly what Gonzo was saying.
It is not a matter of shame at this point(and I do agree with you, Gonzo has none).
Gonzo would have to change his testimony from 'black to white' to make it accurate, and in doing so he would be admitting that he lied during the questioning.
However, nothing will save Gonzo regarding his statements that the Gang of Eight sent him to Ashcroft's hospital room with their urging that Ashcroft reauthorize the intelligence surveillance program other than the Terrorist Surveillance Program. The AP coming into possession of the intel report that refutes that is exactly the type of evidence that you need to make a perjury charge stick.

27. They still need to establish the provenance of said report. |
|
Even though we know full well where it came from. Until they can start tossing White House paper into the air, pawing through files, it's going to be a long, tough slog.
That's what is needed, before they can 'prove' anything--and even though we KNOW he's a lying sackOshit, we need that 'rule of law' proof. I think they'll get there, but I caution those (not you, mind, this is a general observation) that will immediately drag out the "Traitor!" label and accuse Pat Leahy and crew of being "enablers" for not moving 'quickly enough' to box people in or getting a special prosecutor on the job.
It's going to take steps, deliberate steps, to get from point A to point B (for Byebye, Gonzo!). It's not going to happen overnight. And I don't think he'll go quietly. He LIKES being a cabinet official, even at the helm of a dispirited department that wants him gone, too. He just doesn't CARE what people think about him. It's quite astounding--almost pyschopathic.

29. On Hardball yesterday, David Shuster said Gonzo is "STANDING BY HIS TESTIMONY." That may change |
|
after Mueller's testimony, but I really doubt it. He was contradicted yesterday by Harman, Pelosi, and Rockefeller and it didn't mean a thing to him. We shall see if he blinks in light of Mueller's testimony.

Just imagine the opposition political ads that will run against them when they are up for reelection.
They do not want to be seen connected to this sordid affair any more than they want Bush to campaign for them in their home districts.

There have been some things in the past that have taken some time for them to lie their way out of. I think it took nearly a week to come up with a counter to Plame and nearly 3 months to hone it to the lie that the sheep accept as truth today. This one will take some crafting. Look for the first iteration at the afternoon Snowe job tomorrow.

Where are the loudmouth members of the HJC and SJC?
Where are the Chris Cannons and the Orrin Hatchs?
They like this man, they believe in this good man --so why are they not standing side by side with him?
I think we all know the answer to that one!

16. Not surprisingly, the Orlando Slantinel, didn't publish that AP piece. |
|
The 22-17 House subcommittee contempt charge advancement was relegated to page A9, also. The front page was mostly local interest stories, although we did learn that we can become obese through the friends we associate with. :eyes:
On another note, the Vitter story was never mentioned either as it happened. An obligatory syndicated Cal Thomas op-ed piece that mentioned Vitter's troubles appeared a couple of weeks after the fact.

A report back on their response could be 'enlightening' as to how Repubs on the Hill will proceed from here on out in regard to 'defending' Gonzo.
I just wish they would come out in full support of Gonzo today.
Imagine the campaign reelection ads that could be run against them.

|
Because if he does, the new appointee has to be approved by a Democratic congress.
If the Democrats do their job (granted, thats a big if), the new appointee will have to be much less of a loyalist, follow the constitution, and pursue things like contempt citations. That will be disastrous to Bush as the investigations continue to increase.
Checkmate.
