Two Week News Blackout
Just got back from 2 weeks in Haiti, where i was completely cut off from any news source or internet connection. Anyone want to give me a quick summary of the significant events of the past two weeks?

I was really hoping I'd come home to find Bush and Cheney out of office! Sigh.

4. Were you on vacation in Haiti?
As for here, still going after Bushco, still trying to nail that little gonzo turd, impeachment still off the table.

6. I wouldn't call it a vacation.
It was quite an intense and rewarding experience though. I'm going to write about it later in the Astrology forum if you are interested.

I was praying for miracles while I was there, hoping Bush would be up on the table dancing with impeachment.

7. Welcome home!
Last week * signed two important executive orders with potentially far-reaching ramifications:
1. authorizes the seizure of assets of anyone hindering US policy in Iraq w/o due process.

2. authorizes the CIA to torture in its secret prisons again (there was a moratorium IIRC) but this time sexual humiliation is off-limits.

Harriet Meirs didn't show up at her appointed time before Congress and so contempt charges are being filed against her. Since the White House claims to be able to exempt her from testimony because of 'executive privelege' the WH also announced that it would forbid the Dept Justice from actually prosecuting any contempt charges. Dept Justice works for the White House, we're told, not the Constitution or the Republic.

Conyers had a chance to sidestep this with a charge of "inherent contempt" but he decided to call WH bluff.

Conyers also got everyone overexcited last Fri. by announcing at a public appearance that he only needed 3 more supporters in congress in order to introduce Articles of Impeachment vs. Prez and VP. Apparently he didt' get those supporters because he backedpedaled this week, and is suffering the wrath of Sheehan et. al. as a result. He went on CNN to say he didn't have the votes. People think that's not good enough.

Code Pink has a house in DC within walking distance of the Capitol - they're all over the place making noise.

That's the big stuff, off the top of my head.

9. Thank you Lynnertic
Thanks for this recap - it gives me a place to start w/ google so I can catch up on the *important* news.

That first item you listed is quite aweful, especially in its apparent vagary. How is 'hindering' defined?

10. BTW - It's looking like some folks were bashing the Honorable John Conyers recently(?)
That is just shameful. I'm glad I missed that.
