Mueller Backs Comey in Dispute with Gonzales -- Again! with VIDEO!

By Spencer Ackerman - July 26, 2007, 4:27 PM

Former Deputy Attorney General James Comey started a firestorm in May when he revealed his 2004 standoff in John Ashcroft's hospital room. Comey was positioned opposite former White House officials Alberto Gonzales and Andrew Card.

Comey was backed in the encounter by FBI Director Robert Mueller, who allegedly ordered his agents guarding Ashcroft's room not to evict Comey if Gonzales or Card asked them to. Later, he would tell the two White House aides that he was prepared to resign if the President overruled Comey on the wiretapping program.

Responding to questions this afternoon to the House Judiciary Committee's Rep. Melvin Watt (D-NC), Mueller for the first time spoke about the Ashcroft hospital visit -- and backed Comey to the hilt:

3. I NEVER SAW any Clips of Gonzo's "Sorry Ass Lying" on either CNN or MSNBC!
Maybe other DU'ers did...but Gonzo appeared on Tuesday and only Josh Marshall and "Think Progress" seem to have clips...with Josh being the best.

  for the loss of Reporting in America....

4. Did Mueller's response strike you as odd?
"I don't dispute what Mr. Comey said"

Why not just say "I can confirm...."?

Mueller was extremely fidgety and uncomfortable when questioned about what happened at the hospital. Was he warned, threatened? Is he hiding something?

5. yes it did...but the SPIN was that he was "verifying" that it's what our Dems say happened...
Tweety spent alot of time on this with Tony Snow. But...Mueller's reply was defintely "couched" so that either Dems or Repugs could read into it what they wanted. :-(

6. I think it is enough to justify
further inquiry to any reasonable jurist.
