Specter: Senate Dems playing politics w/attacks on Gonzo
Yesterday he didn't believe Gonzo; today, we're playing politics?

Specter: Senate Dems playing politics

Watch Specter’s comments Thursday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sen. Arlen Specter, R.-Pennsylvania, said Thursday that Senate Democrats were just playing politics with their attacks on the Bush administration including their request for a special counsel to investigate Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

“It’s been a great fundraising device for the Democratic Party,” Specter, the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said during a press conference on Capitol Hill.

Specter also accused Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, of having a conflict of interest because Schumer is both in charge of Democratic fundraising in the Senate and is the chairman of the Senate subcommittee whose Democratic members requested the special counsel investigation of Gonzales.

“Everybody’s trying to top everybody else and they’re reaching for the front pages,” said Specter.

30. It's the Specter/Spectre Syndrome
Also known as SSS, a syndrome that affects a certain Senator from Pennsylvania.
The symptoms are:
1. When in a congressional hearing, the Specter part, or professional district attorney persona, takes over making the Senator a formidable foe. While under the influence of this part of the syndrome, the Senator is likely to question the credibility of the witness, or mention that there is a jail in the basement of the Capitol.
2.The other part of the syndrome (Spectre)is likely to show its effects during and after said Senator either has a briefing with the pResident or gets on Air Force One for a short hop to his home state.

No one knows why this syndrome occurs, or how many Senators may be affected by it.
Senators under the influence of this syndrome should not be trusted at face value.
Democrats are looking for a way to help people afflicted by this syndrome, but there is presently no known cure.

7. Do you have any more info about his trip with Bush?
I would like to mention that when I call his office tomorrow. How rich that he accuses the Dems of playing politics after he has a cozy little meeting with King George.

3. What is it Bush has on them?
I read in another thread that he met with Bush* on Air Force One today. He got the message. Only, what in blue blazes does * have on them to make them stick with his sinking ship?

If we could figure that out, maybe the whole thing would make sense and we could make some progress.

6. What does Bush require besides the power of complete political ostracism?
Specter is a politician. What more is required than operational dominance of the party political system to crush and destroy those who defy him?

As for playing politics, upholding the rule of law is a political act, yes, but it's good politics, to be distinguished from bad politics.

10. Specter's concerns about the Dems is a far graver national issue than a seeming perjurer
holding the nation's highest law enforcement office is in fact running a partisan political operation for the WH and in the process making the rule of law a joke on the American people. We must keep our priorities straight.

17. "They're playing politics" is the talking point of someone who knows they're wrong.
If Bush and Cheney went into an orphanage with machetes and hacked up all the children, Democrats would be "playing politics with the issue" if the demanded Bush and Cheney resign.

The ol' Specter "talk tough" then change his mind. We shouldn't be surprised by this anymore.

I wonder what happened with his meeting with Bush.

28. This statement is not consistent with Specter's on
examination of Gonzales. Specter was as frustrated as anyone else with Gonzales' lies. What would Specter have done if Janet Reno h\had lied to Congress and avoided straightforward testimony before Congress. This is very strange. I think the Bush administration works like the Mafia. This is yet another example of a reason for impeaching Bush and Cheney -- their intimidation of other Republicans into silence regarding the Bush wrongdoing.

33. Someone needs to do a brain scan on this guy.
His behavior is increasingly erratic. He's always been a spineless water-carrier, but now he takes a different tack every day, depending on the audience and the situation. He reverses himself constantly.
