On a PBS series about working animals, I think.

7. yeah, who gives a shit about a cat comforting people in the process of dying.
Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 07:56 PM by cryingshame
People who might otherwise die alone.

Go ahead and live in your gray world with no wonder or awe at the magnificence of nature.

Just don't expect the majority of humankind to play along with you in that.

9. Reality is quite wondrous enough, without making shit up like magic necrovoyant cats....
Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 07:59 PM by BlooInBloo
... It's a sad state of affairs when the wonders of reality aren't enough for people.

EDIT: And I'm a hardcore cat lover. It's the magic part that kills me.

12. Who said the cat was magic?
This is not the first animal to be able to detect human illnesses and death. There are several documented cases of dogs who can detect cancer, etc. It might be as simple as a change in smell, but we don't know yet. This IS a wonder of reality.

You can be the first person on my ignore list. Clearly there's no point in talking to you since it doesn't sink in, so there's no point in reading you either.

32. Yeah... I heard about magic dogs that can detect drugs too... the shit people want to believe!
There's healthy skepticism, cynicism, and then there's outright ignorant derision.

Just because you don't understand how it can be done doesn't mean it can't be done. I feel sorry for people that have never experienced extraordinary things.

19. I think it's just responding to the nurse's behavior.
These patients are already having a bad time of it and being treated when the cat lays next to them.

21. I think it might be a scent they are responding to. Something
we can't notice, but the soon-to-be-deceased might be giving off some odor (or breath) related to poor circulation, O2 levels, or something.

I wonder if cats have an instinct to await death as a scavenger/predator. I remember hearing recently that oneof the big cats of Africa usually feeds by scavenging versus hunting. Maybe this cat instinctively waits for death as if he was going to be fed.

Just thinking through my fingers...

23. The author of the article
was on MSNBC this morning. He said that the nurses thought someone was going to die and the cat would have nothing to do with the person. The person did not die.
Another time, the family did not want the cat around so he was sent out and the door was closed. The cat paced back and forth outside the door.

10. that story had me smiling and my eyes moistening at the same time.
if you've ever spent time in a nursing home (I've spent a LOT...a REALLY large amount of time, w/father and Grandmother), you can't imagine how wonderful it is to have cats/dogs, other critters around

there's no way to describe how comforting it is to have animals around, especially free roaming kitties, in nursing homes, or any long term care facilities. My dad was in a VA hospital for the last 10 years or so of his life, and AFAIK, they still don't allow animals, even for visits. if only they'd wise up

when it's your time folks, and I imagine most of us are going to end up in one of those places (unless you're very lucky with your families), try to find one that has their OWN non-human staffers

you'll be glad you did.

and to all the hard cases who object to KO running this, WTF is wrong with a 'news' story?????? BTW, there was an article in JAMA about the cat, so as far as the story's newsworthiness, stuff it!
