Where are the cockfighting defenders to stand up for Michael Vick?

I read DU for quite a while before I joined. One day I read a thread in which people were defending cockfighting as a "cultural event". If I remember correctly, there was also some support for animal sacrifices for "religious" purposes.

I found both things to be kind of shocking for a "liberal" site. Where are these people now? Shouldn't they be defending Michael Vick?

and its arguably more moral than slaughter animals to eat. At least an animal in a fight has a 50% chance of living, an animal for the slaughter is always going to be killed. Just because one is done a lot and the other isn't, doesn't make them morally different.

in GD, around the time of the Louisiana cockfighting ban. There was also some specific debate about the role of cockfighting in Puerto Rico, and if the US should do something about it, and it's role in Latin American and Latino culture more generally.

I'll refrain from calling anybody out on it, but that should be plenty to search it up.

I don't practice cockfighting. Never have, even in Puerto Rico, where it's perfectly legal. However, I do defend its right to exist because of its cultural significance in the Spanish speaking world.

However, I fail to see how cockfighting is the same as dogfighting. The latter is one of the most despicable acts a human can get involved in. Dogs are pets, man's best friend- animals that are capable of giving and receiving love. How can someone defend something as barbaric as dogfighting? Michael Vick and whoever is involved in dogfighting should be considered a dangerous individual.

Roosters are not affective creatures; they are farm animals raised to be killed and eaten. They are quite aggressive and they fight each other naturally. I can understand why most people in this country find it reprehensible, but it is a fundamental part in the cultural development of Spanish-speaking America, and I tried to illustrate in the old thread.

Finally, I came from Spain recently, where I had the chance to learn about bullfighting and visit some arenas and stuff. I can't help it- I think bullfighting is disgusting and unfair to the animal, but it is such a fundamental part of Spanish culture that without it Spain wouldn't be Spain. It's their identity, and they should decide if they wanna get rid of that eventually or not.

After all, Spanish kill bulls... we kill Iraquis...
