7. Greg Palast is the best of the best. If ya haven't read "Armed Madhouse"
I would suggest doing so.

I just checked with my PBS station here and "David Iglesias" (one of the eight fired U.S. Attorneys) in on instead of Greg Palast. But that doesn't surprise me, because here in Midland Texas they have a way of muzzling left wing programs.

66. Heck, I've run into people here who hadn't heard of him,
which in itself wouldn't have thrown me. After all, there was a time when I hadn't heard of him either, and I'll wager the same is true of everyone else here.:P

But a "Who's Greg Palast and why should I care what he thinks?" Well, that was where I had to :wow:.

8. put 2+2 together again. Thanks Mr. Palast
for being one of the view voices to be willing to state the obvious. The federal attornies fired were the ones who would not cooperate with the Keep Out The Vote scheme to suppress Democratic voters across the country.

They intend to keep it going by keeping the white house and enough seats in congress to paralyze that branch.

"Greg Palast: Those are the purge lists. For 2004, we have the caging lists. And in 2008, we’re going to have what’s called the verification list.

BuzzFlash: Meaning the return of the Jim Crow laws, I assume?

Greg Palast: When I say the 2008 race has already been stolen, about a million and a half voter registrations have been turned down. Even though there have been massive voter registration drives among Hispanics and African Americans, as the churches fill up the bucket, there’s a hole in the bucket where the registrations are being dumped.

It used to be that you signed your name -- bang, you got through, you’re registered. Not anymore. About 40% of the registrations are being rejected on the grounds that they don’t match citizenship files. Well, you know what? It ain’t the Soviet Union. We don’t have citizenship files in the United States. They don’t exist. They can’t exist under the law, which is the U.S. Constitution.

So how do you verify voters? Well, you don’t. About the only thing that could happen is if you require a passport -- and who has passports? "
http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/interviews/061

Of course our pom-pom squad here is not going to like what Mr. Palast has to say one bit. He is not too kind to our corrupt party leadership.

10. When is something going to be done about all the troubles we have with our elections? I do not
understand why people aren't fighting tooth and nail to make sure our elections are real and relevant. Otherwise, all we have is a dictatorship with big expensive campaigns that are just for show.

82. It's obvious our govt doesn't really want
"people" to vote. They (both sides) only want partisans to vote. An answer to these questions may convince you that the above is true.

Why not declare election day a national legally paid holiday?

Why not have "election day" a span of time like election weekend or election week or even election month?

Why not have every American "report" in person (with appropriate accommodations for special cases) once every 4 years in order to have an accurate census and at the same time they could vote if they choose to do so?

Why do everything possible to make it difficult to vote instead of easier to vote ask your congress critter you'll get the usual bullshit excuses. Don't feed me the line about how Dem's want more people to vote, they do to a point, but they still only concentrate their efforts on those likely to vote for THEM.

The real answer is we only want "our" side to vote.

79. Why should they?
There's no margin for the Democrats in fighting voter discrimination or election rigging. It just doesn't pay.

Financially, the party has never been healthier, with corporate money rolling in like the proverbial mighty waters. In fact, as every fundraiser knows, bad news is good for the bottom line. Being out of power under an extremist regime in the aftermath of banana republic-style elections--why, that makes people mad. It causes them to write out checks. Ask a party fundraiser or the subscription desk at The Nation: nothing pays like scandal.

Fundamentally, the machinery of democracy is irrelevant to party health. The party can attend to its highest mission--self-perpetuation--without winning elections or even lifting a finger to ensure that the elections are fair.

But there are deeper reasons, too, for not "standing up for voting rights."

When you've essentially abandoned the urban underclass to the fates of outsourcing, exploitative retail and fast food work, forced prison labor and army "volunteerism," you hardly worry about whether that class can vote. Empowering their voting may even be counterproductive. After all, it can lead to the reality of having to represent them, when in fact whom you truly intend to represent is their corporate exploiters. Campaign donations ensure that you know who's who, and they aren't shy about telling you what they want.

No, reform is a can of worms. Better (it will seem) to make a stink now and then whenever vote rigging by the other side gets a little too obvious, a little too smelly. The public will have forgotten by the time the next millionaire heiress is in jail or a suitably cool cell phone captures its fancy. Meanwhile, you can go back to the business of raising money--the essence, the ambition, the exaltation of American politics.

20. "Senators to abandon '08 e-voting paper trail mandate"
WASHINGTON--Democratic senators on Wednesday made another push for banning electronic voting machines that lack paper trails, but they've backed away from doing so in time for next year's presidential election.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the chief sponsor of a contentious bill called the Ballot Integrity Act that proposes such changes, said she fears requiring all states to employ so-called voter-verified paper records in their systems, with some primaries only six months away, "could be an invitation to chaos." Earlier this year, she called for enacting such changes by 2008.

"Pushing the date back to the 2010 elections will give us more time to reach a bipartisan consensus with voting reform advocates and local and state officials to enact a new law that provides for increased accuracy and accountability at the polls without raising the specter of creating major new errors," she said at the start of a hearing here in the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, which she leads. more > http://news.com.com/Senators+to+abandon+08+e-voting+paper+trail+mandate/2100-1014_3-6198789.html

22. This sounds like the beginning...
...of an effort to connect the dots on election fraud. I wouldn't be surprised if both Palast and Iglesias appear in this program. Probably it will leave more questions than answers.

Remember...most of this is NOT EVEN ON THE RADAR of average citizens. We've paid attention for years...but most people can't connect the voting rights issue with the issue of firing judges. This program may be the START of that effort. I really hope so. If it is, be ready to applaud and support it...rather than be critical because it doesn't go as far as we would wish. :)

47. Sooo many red herrings out there in the "clean up elections"
debate. Did you read Holt's bill that thankfully went down last week? Me neither. It was crazy long with all that lawyer mumbo-jumbo, but i gathered it was supposed to require a "paper trail".
A receipt. Yeah, so for a recount we would count .....what again? Have everyone bring back their receipts? No, just re-run the optical scan numbers, junk in junk out.

This is not rocket science folks. Hand Counted Paper Ballots. HCPB's. There should not be a computer of any size or shape anywhere close to a polling place. Diebold and the rest belong in jail. And Mr. Holt. Turns out his bill would have made billions for a firm in his district(something like appenture, or some bs).

Get a bunch of bic pens. Simplify the ballot. Run a bunch off down at Kinkos the week before, mail samples out. Bingo, done and done. This complete garbage about throwing bad money after worse to get a new computer scheme that may screw up a little less than the last boondoggle its just crazy. Demand the entire country uses hand counted paper ballots.

Oh, for a hanging chad. I personally LOVED the sight of 2 judges, 1 from each party, going over the results vote by vote. That's democracy baby! To use such a thing of beauty to launch the Trojanest of horses on a gullible public as "Help America Vote" Act. Please. It was help the neocons steal more elections with rigged software we are not allowed to see because its F'in PROPRIETARY?????????????? (act) Do not let anyone tell you we don't have time to fix everything thats wrong with elections nationwide before first primary. Take all Sequoia, ES&S and Diebold junk and donate it to elementary schools for their class president elections. Call Bic, Kinkos and were all set. No more exit polls being WAY OFF, just like in the good old days

81. you are so right
:applause:

We should all be offended by these red herring election 'reform' bills. Like you say, look at who stands to profit...follow the money, it tells the story.

We should be greatly offended by these cheap efforts to salvage the boondoggle crappy e-voting machines by sticking printers on them. Add more equipment to screw up. What a dumb idea (but look at all the profit from this equipment and maintenance).

As for running down to Kinko's, well it's already easier than that in the many states that have been using paper ballots (ie. opti-scan cards) for decades. That system could be made to work safely with very little effort. And it's SO much cheaper.

We absolutely must have rigorous hand-counting during the voting process and during recounts, and for that you need paper ballots. DUH.

I have worked in elections and I couldn't agree more. We need to hold out for paper BALLOTS (not "trails" or "records" as they term these backward CYA solutions).

---------------------
PAPER BALLOTS, hand-counted & random audits.
And as u say--EXIT POLLS like we used to have.

60. In 2004, he listed the states that will steal it: Florida, Ohio, New Mexico
and a few others I don't recall. He was in AAR the day before the election. He also predicted the day after that Kerry will fold immediately.

72. Florida and Ohio, of course, had willing GOVERNORS . . .
Jeb Bush, of course -- and Blackwell in Ohio?
I don't know about New Mexico -- Richardson? Dem?
Palast covers a story like that in Richardson not wanting to challenge the vote count --
Passing law that you had to pay $1 million to get a recount!!!

It's in his book -- Armed Madhouse -- I have it --

including a state on that list.

83. orleans - when is it airing on Sunday?
I couldn't find it on WYCC - just a note that they weren't airing NOW for two weeks. That was part of my beef last night - that WYCC and WTTW weren't airing it at all. If they are, guess I will have to settle down. :)

74. I saw it earlier tonight. Great show. The scary part
is near the end where he says they are not only gearing up again for 2008, but have gotten better at the game than before. More sophisticated voter suppression is apparently coming.

77. I ask you.................
I ask you, just what kind of country do these people want to live in? I guess they will get theirs so piss on everyone else. Why don't we see this story on CBS, CNN and MSNBC? This isn't a simple matter of denying black people the right to vote, this action has resulted in the incorrect result in two consecutive presidential elections. Our democracy is no more. This has become The Confederate States of America.

80. Oh, I agree that democracy has been trashed.
If you cannot guarantee honest elections, then it is a wash. They think that they belong to an elite group that should dictate life to the rest of the peons and that the peons shouldn't share in the vote.

76. GREG PALAST SHOULD HAVE A PBS SHOW -- Forget Brancaccio --
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 12:32 AM by defendandprotect
he's useless --

Greg Palast is the guy and he should have his own PBS show --

Brancaccio didn't mention that of 3+ MILLION "caging" challenges they were successful in sustaining 1 MILLION of them -- !!!!

Also -- he didn't hook up the idea of the state corruption with the Governors . ...

Jeb Bush - Blackwell --

Did he even mention Greg Palast's book -- "ARMED MADHOUSE' . . . ???? GREAT BOOK --

Also, Brancaccio mentions the long lines -- Wow -- they were some long lines which went on for four and five hours -- machines not working or not delivered -- and, again, here you would have had the cooperation of the Republican Governor who would help rig these delays/long lines in Democratic areas. We need full scale investigations of all of this --
